Depending on your location and if you can wait, ordering is the way to go.

I hope 8-10 weeks is the average. I ordered mine on 11/25/14 and it still hasn't left the factory. Now mine is stuck on some quality hold so it's not normal but just know it can take substantially longer than 8-10 weeks.

I'm not trying to say don't order, I'm just saying don't bank on the 8-10 weeks. Waiting is brutal especially if your current daily driver isn't reliable. Best of luck!

Even without Xplan, you should'nt ever have to pay over invoice which should take roughly $3K off of MSRP right away. I would'nt worry about test drive miles. 99% of those have a salesman with them......
What's the best option to get the best deal? Building the car online first or going in to speak with some dealers before ordering? If you order through the dealership will it be a better deal? Sorry if this is a dumb question haven't had to custom order a car before

Thank you for all the replies. I think ordering is the way to go. I had no idea the wait time is only 8-10 weeks, I was expecting a LOT longer.

So the dealer shopping game begins. I wish I could just buy the car online and have it delivered. Why is it still such a hassle to buy a car? Cmon amazon get with the times.

Don't believe 8 - 10 weeks. I would call that minimum.

I've been waiting 7 weeks with a priority 10 and still no VIN. 4000 cars were held up for over a month due to a QC issue recently.

Sometimes you get lucky. I thought I'd have to order if I wanted a black base with pp, all I was finding listed at local dealers was loaded up premiums. Even if I did find one, I was willing to pass it up if it had even 20 miles worth of test drives for the same reasons as you.

By searching ford.com I ended up finding exactly what I was looking for at what seems to be the best local dealer to buy a mustang from and the car had zero test drives, still hiding out back all dirty and wrapped in plastics all unpresentable fresh off the truck just like I had hoped. 5 miles on the clock. Three months of not waiting = three extra months of neck breaking from all the attention these things get right now. Sometimes I want to drive my truck because Im not in the mood for conversation lol.

I tried ford.com multiple times and they show me the 100% matches of my selection. but the only exact match they got was the model: mustang. Everything else was all over the place (style/color/auto/6mt...). i was expecting them to be on top of that search engine thing.

i will keep trying thou.

order you will know it's not a dealer test mule like my 11 GT was. You don't want that. Mine had 4.2 at test drive after ordered and 9.7 delivered which was 9.5 with me driving.

But it will range from 3 to 18 off the truck and more with special paper note of QC driving it/testing it, you just want to note miles before PDI, otherwise off the truck.

When i ordered mine i couldn't find what i wanted and dealers near me (very few) had either no Mustangs or 1 or 2 at best but not even close to what i wanted. I still have yet to see a 15' Mustang in my town or surrounding towns driving on the road. Needless to say i had to order mine 1/27/15 and it should be here next week.

If you have the time and you are a patient person, ordering will get you exactly what you want. And what's better than exactly what you want?? Buying off the lot... who knows how long its sat out in the cold weather... who knows how its been test driven... how many grubby fingers have smeared up the touchscreen... etc. You'll also have time to search for rebates and what not. I ended up getting x-plan and $2000 in rebates for my time. But that was back in Nov/Dec. Not sure what's available nowadays.
