Hey there.

I’m just wondering if anyone here purchased their Mustang from a different state.

Which transportation company did you end up using and how was the whole process in general?

Cheers!

I've bought three cars from interstate including the mustang. I'll never forget the feeling of seeing my (now gone)Jag XKR roll off the back of the truck when it arrived, I could barely believe it as I had only seen crappy photos of it. With the Mustang, it came up from Gosford I think and with COVID and all it took longer than I was expecting, but anyway the process is pretty much this:

1. times really depend on where you are sending from and too. Like there are lots of trucks coming Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane, so if your car is from Melbourne or Sydney it is cheaper getting it to Brisbane, and lots of options;
2. assuming that you are buying through a dealer, they usually wont put it on the truck until you have paid for it, so there will be a time pressure there. In each case the dealer picked the transport company, possibly a carton of beer in it for them;
3. but then you have to wait for the truck to leave. With the XKR the truck pretty much left the same day as it was put on, but with the Mustang it was a week before it left;
4. the actual transport only takes a couple of days, but some drivers will drop the car to you (which happened with the XKR and my wife's first Jag XE) and others will take the car to the big depot at Fishermans Island near the airport, and you can pick it up from there if you are eager (as I did with the Mustang, as it would have taken another 2 days to get it back to the Gold Coast;
5. dont expect the car to be clean when you get it, and make sure the dealer is giving you 2 sets of keys.

I probably should add that it means that you have to either get the first registration of the car (which involves taking it straight to DMR for registration, it should have everything with it to allow registration), or if it is still registered to the interstate, you get 30 days to register in Queensland, when you get hit with the duty as well. The hardest part about all of that is finding the compliance plate, in one of the Jags it was under the spare wheel.

That’s a lot of information. Thanks!

It’s never ideal I guess, but that’s the only way. Based on what you’ve mentioned, I’ve got a few follow up questions if that’s okay.
  1. Did your dealer organise the shipping? And was it an open truck? I’d freak out thinking the car is just exposed to the elements for a few days especially with the Australian weather we’ve been getting.
  2. How much roughly should I expect to pay? It’s from NSW to QLD. South of Sydney (about 4 hours) to the Sunshine Coast.
  3. Most importantly, the registration. From what I’ve been told, it’ll be sent with a “temporary” rego just for the transfer, then I’ll have to get that sorted in QLD. The TMR also told me that I wouldn’t need a roadworthy or to have the car with me, as long as it hasn’t been driven more than 500KMs. Is this is the best way to go about it?

Hi, freight for mine (from South Nowra) was $770. Yes the dealer organised it and it was an open truck, I have seen closed trucks (a friend recently took delivery of a p720 and it came in a closed truck) but honestly I've never been concerned, I suppose that hail is the real risk.

If I had my time over I think I would have just flown down and picked it up, with all the faffing about it was over two weeks between paying for the car and getting it and I was like a dog with two dicks. But at the time I thought it would only be 4 or 5 days from payment, and also there were lockdowns popping up everywhere. But with it not being registered in NSW, maybe that isnt an option.

Yeah with the TMR that was my understanding too, but in the cars that didnt have current rego I took them in to get rego straight away.

Spot on. Hail is my main concern with transportation. Especially for a car that can't be replaced.

$770 is not too bad. I've just started looking but it's going to be at least $1500 especially if I want a closed truck & it probably will be a couple of days only.

Indeed with your situation it would have been much harder with the lockdowns. I've considered flying down and just driving it back up to QLD but it's almost 2000KMs and a 14 hours drive. Not sure if it's worth it. I'll probably spend $500 just on gas LOL.

I used Prixcar to get a car from Adelaide to Wollongong a couple of years ago. (about $650). I found them excellent to deal with.

You can get an on-line Quote, and also trace the progress and location of your car on-line.

You could also try CEVA. Ford were using Prixcar, however now using CEVA

CEVA Interstate Car Transport Services | Car Transporters | Car Transport Australia | CEVA Car Carrying

PRIXCAR Interstate Car Transport Services Australia | PrixCar

BTW, "Gas" is something Americans put in their Fuel Tank, we use "Fuel" in the Fuel Tank. lol

Well, it’s an American vehicle, so I think gas is appropriate LOL.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, from what I’ve gathered Ford are using CEVA. I’m mainly concerned about hailstorms. I guess I just shouldn’t stress too much about it and be optimistic.
