Just bought a wrecked 17 GT with 88k miles off of Copart and the motor runs excellent and quiet. Every now and then there is a knocking /heavy tapping noice in the front section of the driver's side cylinder head. Before I tear into this engine can I get some idea as to what common issues can cause this in the Coyote engine.

intermittent 1700-before 2000 rpm is prob the bbq tick. lots of thread covering this. lots of users myself included have had good luck with liquimoly ceratec additive. if that doesnt help it may be something else. change oil and throw in a bottle of ceratec and see if it quiets down.

Forgot to mention the noise is mainly at idle when it happens.

Not saying this is what you are hearing but some info for you.

SSM 47787 - 2011-2019 Mustang/F-150 - 5.0L - Tick Tap And/or
Typewriter Noise At Idle
Some 2011-2019 Mustang and F-150 vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine may
exhibit a ticking noise at idle after an engine oil change. It is often referred to as
typewriter noise because of its similarity to the sound of a mechanical typewriter.
The noise in question may be heard on some engines when engine temperatures
reach 150°F (65°C) or higher and engine speed is at idle up to approximately
1700 RPM's. It can typically be heard at the front wheel well, and is often isolated to
the transmission bell housing or oil pan area. typewriter noise is not detrimental to
engine function or durability and has no short or long term effectson the engine.
This an operating characteristic of the 5.0L engine and no repairs should be
attempted.

It probably is the tick, but something about your description makes me question that. If you would please answer these questions, maybe we could help you find out!

Questions
----------------------------
Is the frequency of the knocking like 2-3 seconds apart, not consistent in timing with itself, and not really in sync with the firing frequency either? If that makes any sense... lol

Is it more bassey like a rod/bearing knock or kick drum, mid range like a snare drum, or trebly like a typewriter tick or closed hi hat cymbal?

If you turn the AC compressor on or off, does that affect the sound? Like make it go away or come back.

Does it go away if you rev the motor to 2000 in neutral?

----------------------

My car's tick is more trebly, like 2 to 3 seconds apart, and goes away if i kick off the AC compressor or raise the rpm more than 2000. Maybe not all 5.0s share this pattern exactly, but it's what mine does so that's what i got to work with! I have a 22 though, 28k miles.

Putting it up next to concrete or a solid wall brings the sound out. Recently, I thought mine went away, but what really happened is i stopped going to jack in the box, which is the only place i use the drive thru at, and theirs really reflects it clearly! I usually go inside to pick up food elsewhere, which is my explanation for my mistaken belief that it had gone was l away. I had to double check it to confirm i still had it, which I did.

It is a consistent tap once warmed up but not all the time. Seems to be with timing frequency. Most times it is like what is described as the typewriter sound or lighter. Goes away when revved up. Sometimes very light but sometimes a heavy tap almost a knocking sound but very rarely. Always in the same area of the engine (front of drivers side head). Due to the wreck the AC is inoperable right now.
