I tried prying up inner part of the retainer on the carpeted mat with a very small screw driver, but it won't budge. This gouged the outside of the retainer, so I wanted to ask before I just used a bigger screw driver (to make a bigger gouge) if that is not the correct way to undo the retainer. I'm trying to put in my optional OEM all weather mats.

I figured it out.

Use a regular sized or larger flat blade screw driver to pry between underside of mat at the clip area. This releases with a snap. Other mats (or originals) just snap on from the top.
