You might want to specify which one; there're TWO. One in the glovebox, and the other below the rocker switches. And I'd also say what you want to put there instead :).

I want to remove the socket in the center console...the one below the rocker switches. I'll cover the hole with a plug. I want to power a light through the back side that will work with the other dash lights. That is the plan at the moment.

Skip to 3:52 to see the cig lighter part.

Basically, you have to take the entire dash apart. The two big "gotchas" to watch out for are the long, silver trim piece that goes across the dash (don't bend it!) and the shift boot plate. It's a bitch to get off the first time. After you've had it off once or twice the clips loosen up but that first time is rough.

Thanks, but for all that work (and risk), I'll use a different approach.

I don't blame you. A couple years bak when I put in my sub/amp, I wanted to run the "bass knob" but decided against it b/c putting either in the dash or console involved taking everything apart.

I'm currently neck-deep in a full-blown install and about to gut the interior completely. Heh, when you kick the can down the road, eventually you will come to where the can landed.

Is the best way to get a power line from the fuse box to the interior to go through the firewall behind the battery?

Yes, That's a great spot to run a wire. Here's where I ran the power cable for my stereo system:
