From my personal experience you have roughly 1 gallon of gas left after your gauge reads 0 miles to empty. As to how far that will get you depends on your driving conditions. I have gotten over 20 miles after hitting zero in the Mustang but thats on the highway which is my main route to and from work. I have gone even further in my GTI's but they were less thirsty cars. I frequently get gas after the gauge is well into the red zone and have been doing this with all of my cars over the years. Only ran out of gas once and that was because I forgot to fuel up the next day
