Normally my family says Aki-meshte Omedeto Gozai amass. I know how to ask for things and greetings, my kids are fluent.It's, "ake mashite oh medetoh gozai masu" and additionally, "shin nen mo omakase itashi masu".

I'm in eastern PA, I spent 11 days over there with friends in Nov of 18 on vacation though. I have family and friends who were stationed in Okinawa but I never had any ties to the country like that.
I was actually looking to go back in 2021 but yeah, the Covid thing was happening. I'm hoping to maybe return in a year or two.
Japan removed Visa requirements in October I believe. You have to be fully vaccinated to include booster or PCR Covid test 72 hrs before flying. I was going to come in August and did have to apply for a Visa but you had to be listed on the Koseke. Koseke is a listing of family members, as Japan was closed to individual tours.
It's a useful skill. Attended public school from K-9 and aside from the wrong skin color was indistinguishable from the rest.
