They are running off the stock head unit and amp..They sound Much better than stock speakers but I need more. Do you think I should run an external amp to these? My plan is to install a 10 sub and amp in the very near future. I listen to mostly Rock/Metal.Thanks

Most aftermarket speakers will sound better when pushed with an amp. Lower power sources on a speaker with higher power capability means distortion quite early/easy. My last car had JL TR series speakers which I amplified and they were the best sounding speakers I have had - and the second set of JL TR I have owned too, the first set I didn't amplify.

To get the maximum out of any speaker upgrade, you'll need to reverse the effects of the stock stereo programming/tuning. I had to do this in my Raptor. I used a JL Audio Signal Summing Interface to level the speaker voltages front and rear and then had a JL Audio CleanSweep sound processor installed after that. These are the exact units I used on the truck. YMMV on the Mustang.

Thanks, I'm just starting out right now. I'm thinking about going with a single 10 possibly an Alpine type r... But I've read some good things about the Pioneer Champions? Any thoughts on that and an amp recomendations

I like the concept of the cleansweep, and although I understand it's basis - and the fact it has many eq bands, I would think a 7 band EQ could cure most factory problems with some hands on time for a much lower cost. The cleansweep just seems pricey.

I hadn't heard of them either. Then I talked to a stereo guy and $3200 later, I'm happy as hell with the stereo.

Full setup:
2x JL C3-570
2x JL C2-570x
2x JL 10TW3
Fiberglass box bolted down under rear seat (off-road proof which is a big plus)
JL SSI
JL CleanSweep
JL XD400/4
Sundown SAE-1000D (sub amp)

with all the DSP that's embedded into cars these days, using something like a cleansweep is pretty much a must if you're trying to use the stock head unit, which is way too integrated these days to easily swap out.

Exactly. There are other options from Mosconi and Rockford Fosgate (to name a few), but I was already going JL and I like that this one was plug and play. Plug it in, run the test disc, let it calibrate, then start tuning the amps. I'm extremely pleased with the unit and love that I can roll my windows down and pop open the sunroof and turn up the music as loud as I like without restrictive factory "tuning" cutting bass/highs.
