The Tremec TR-3160 was rethought for the track-attack Shelby Mustangs

The Tremec TR-3160 six-speed that will be splitting the torque from the GT350 and GT350R’s 5.2L flat-plane V8 is unique for the two track-attack Shelby Mustangs. “Any transmission backing this engine requires a certain amount of high-power, high-rpm capability,” said Jeff Albers, powertrain engineering supervisor with Ford.

Trick parts like a gun-drilled main shaft reduce weight by hollowing the shaft, while additional honing and heat-treating stiffen the assembly so that a tighter lash can be kept between the light-weight and heavily machined gear set. Extra attention was given to the gear set in order to reduce the weight of the rotating components of the transmission as much as possible for faster shifts when pulling the gear shifter at more than 8,000 rpm; along with less noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH).

Additionally, a dual-mass flywheel is used so that a more compact and light-weight clutch can be used without a sprung hub on the clutch disc. This again helps to quicken shifts by reducing rotating mass in the driveline.

The GT350 and GT350R-spec TR-3160 also uses a unique bellhousing and tailshaft to further reduce the size and weight of the transmission.

When it comes to putting up with the substantial heat created by track use, the TR-3160 uses an external transmission oil cooler on Track Pack-equipped GT350s and all GT350Rs. In fact, instead of simply being shoved in front of the radiator, Ford has packaged the transmission cooler with its own ducting from the front fascia. The transmission even has a white flag sensor in order to warn the driver if the transmission is over-heating. While Ford calls this an “unlikely event,” it’s good to know there’s a little extra insurance there. Even race cars have oil pressure lights!

While it may be awhile before they become parts cars – and these cars will, naturally, find a tree on occasion with an under-equipped driver— the GT350-package does bring some interesting new hardware into the Ford family. Imagine a fly-weight Fox with a 5.2L Voodoo and TR-3160.

Thanks for the info. Saw a guy long for one to throw in his Factory Five kit car. With his coyote. Good choice it appears.

Edit - nice to see a cast in case shifter bracket, nice pivot ball for the shifter arm too.

That is not "cast in case shiftier bracket" That is no different than whats on the MT82 the shifter is still remote mounted a foot back from the end of the transmission.

this is cast in.

Dang well it looked like one piece. I don't see why they can't build the last 3rd of the transmission casing to accommodate the car. I guess that has become too expensive.

This 3160 is also put in the new Camaro's in both the 4 and 6. I wonder why they didn't use it in the 6.2 as it sounds like it's quite a bit lighter.
