Dang I knew they were strict from what my uncle has told me didn't know they were that stingy.
They got a lot worse two years ago, with the "sticker rule." Now, ALL aftermarket equipment has to bear a sticker attesting to its CARB E.O. number. And there's no grandfather clause. So, my 88GT, which I had been modifying for the 7 years I owned it, was loaded with equipment that had been legal when I bought it, including a BBK CAI, JBA shorty headers, a Mor-Flow catted H-Pipe and more. All have EO numbers. I have the paperwork on all of the parts. But exactly none of them have the EO number on a sticker or metal tag affixed to the part. The smog shop had a field day with me in 2014, after having passed the car four times in previous years. I was so frustrated I just sold it to some poor unsuspecting kid who thought it was the best thing he'd ever seen.

Very sad, they think a sticker makes the air cleaner.

While the letter of the law is pretty strict, getting through inspection with shorties isnt all that bad. I went rounds with a few CA inspection stations with my GTO (full intake and exhaust along with a 150 wet kit on it) but my '12 Mustang slid through the cracks every time.
