I never liked the SN95/new edge much but yes your right that the resemblance is definitely there. I'm not sure if they were saying that back in '94 but if I had been in the market for a Mustang back then I wouldve for sure said it looks like a Taurus just like I and many others are saying now.

I guess the S197 spoiled a lot of us in the last 10 years. As I said, I do not dislike the design and definitely it looks better than any Mustang from 79-04 IMO even unpainted and with all that camo and testing gear on it. I'm eagering waiting to see the whole thing finished and hoping that I dont have to go shopping for a 14. I really want the IRS and hopefully some weight loss.

While S550 is taking on some of the corporate look -- it is still 100% Mustang. In my opinion, it looks more like the 2013 GT500 with more aggressive headlights than it does a Fusion. I just looks like a Mustang.

And I would argue that Mustang had those front end/grill shapes first -- and just because they lopped off the corners of the upper grill doesn't change that. So, Fusion copied Mustang...

I said right when the 13 Fusion came out that with some tweaking it could have been modified for the next gen Mustang design. Maybe they should have waited, maybe not. As mustang fans we'd rather be the first one out the gate with the design, but the numbers probably justified the product roadmap that Ford went with. Its hard to argue with 250k or so sales a year. The Mustang will never see those numbers again.

Here's a '93 Taurus SHO compared to the '94 GT.

Why didn't the SN95 look "dated" before it came out? Or did it? Seems to have done plenty good in sales regardless.
You are right. It already looks dated to me because the Fusion has been out for a while. Its just like how Gm showed the Camaro for a couple of years before it went into production and when it did it looked somewhat dated also.

I know its not fair to judge by just a spy pic of a mocked up front end but I am just not excited at all anymore. I dont like the catfish grills on the corporate Fords and I think the Mustang should be set apart. Almost every last one of them remind me of the 98 Camaro. I know looks are always subjective and you cant please everybody. For the love of God though this is a Mustang and not a Focus. Please Ford, dont screw it up.
GM showed the actual Camaro front end tho, in concept form for 3 years prior and then the entire car basically in close to final pre production form maybe a year before production IIRC. THat's a little different than seeing a similar design language on a sedan/hot hatch vehicle.

Let's just hope they nail the rear. To me, it was the ass that saved the SN95's. The same thing might have to happen for me to love the S550.

It seems to me that we've been seeing the trend of similar design cues in the front end of Ford vehicles for the last 3 years or so....so I'm not sure that if it translates over to the Mustang, that we should be all that surprised. Changes began in the Mustang when they went to a common front end in the lineup from V6 thru Shelby GT 500. Corporate and brand identity are pretty big ideas these days...I think they are going for immediate corporate Ford recognition when you look at these cars. I think it can be done....brand identity and individual vehicle identity...you just have to be smart about it.

It's not just going to be the front and rear design that will differentiate. Dimensions, size and weight will be a big factor in overall feel of the car and also how the profile/roofline is established.

That comparison you have up there, the 93 Taurus and the 94 Mustang differed by about 10" in overall length. These days the Mustang has grown so large that it is within a few inches of a 4 door Fusion. If rumors are true about overhangs being taken in by almost double digits it wont look anything like a Fusion other than maybe the shape of the grill.

Dont forget these.

Ford's been previewing this look for years. Im not that surprised. I dont know why everyone else seems so shocked.

I see all over the web "Mustangs have never looked like......" For a car based off the Falcon and that started with some European influence this just doesnt make sense.
