Just noticed my boot lid doesn't have the emergency release handle fitted as per the USA versions. In fact there doesn't appear to be one fitted at all.

Is this normal for UK cars?

First world problems and all that!!!

if you've got someone in the boot you probably don't want them escaping.

You never know... but you might even be correct... there's probably some legislation in the US that states if the trunk is big enough to to hold a full grown adult...

Or maybe it's for when you're involved in a collision and can't get the doors open... but then if the crash is that bad... how the hell are you supposed to be in a fit enough state to crawl through to the rear seats (folding them down on the way through of course) to get out through the trunk. I can't even get into the back with the seats folded and fully forward to even vacuum the damn thing and clean the rear window!

My convertible has it - in fact it wasn't connected when I picked the car up but flapping around in the boot and it was the only item that needed attention when I took it in for my free / courtesy oil change at 1500 miles with Hendy Chandlers Ford.

The release is in the corner of the rear seats - not that I have ever tried to use it!

Yes it's a us thing , the same reason you have to take doors of fridges when you take them for trash and why you can by an ak47 with out a mental health check

Forgot to mention the only state with an exception for the trunk is New Jersey for obvious reasons

Thanks chaps. I knew we'd get there eventually. Rather worried so many of you want to go round with bodies in your boot. Are we becoming the new truck drivers?

You know, we need somewhere to hide the injured bodies when we rail into them after meets...

Don't want to, it's just an unavoidable necessity sometimes ;)

The one fitted to the rear of the bootlid (in luminous yellow) is US spec only, due to the H&S rules there.

I do believe there is another emergency release around the rear seats on our cars, but havent gone looking.

Also, try closing the boot (car locked) with the keys in the boot......
