Hmmm maybe something to do with DI then? This is the first 4 cylinder car I've had, let alone DI.

It definitely is, they tend to be tuned to run rich from the factory because the cylinder temps are higher than port injection.

It's not just about how rich the engine runs. Direct injection inherently makes more soot/particulate because the fuel hits the piston, valve, or cylinder wall.

So the short answer is, the government didn't start regulating tailpipe soot emission on direct injection gasoline engines until 2017-2018 time frame. So expect the refreshed models to have less.

The soot is mostly from burning oil as a result of Ford's poor PCV design on ecoboost engines. The turbo F150s have the exact same issue. The best fix for this issue is installing a quality oil catch and emptying regularly during oil changes.

I have a good CC and still have the problem very bad. My beautiful Magnaflow chrome exhaust tips are paying the price.

Same thing. I have a catch can and Magnaflow catback. Those beautiful tips aren't beautiful anymore.

This is definitely not an oil issue, but a tuning issue. Turbo cars intentionally run super rich for safety, thus producing more soot from the exhaust. Every single turbo car I've ever owned has done this.

Even if it's lean it will still make soot because it is direct injection. Richness of the mixture is only one contributor to soot on direct injection. It's the rail pressure, spray targeting, valve timing, injection timing--all things you as an owner can't really fix.

That's why Ford went to direct + port injection on the new 3.5L Ecoboost and the new 5.0 V8's coming out for 2018. Port injection doesn't make soot like direct injection does, unless it's very rich.

I'd also add that lots of cars have somewhat sooty tailpipe tips, it's mostly a matter of degree. Even my NA stock port-injected Scion has a relatively sooty tailpipe.

Most of my previous cars were V8 Mustangs, the next to the last one was supercharged too. I'm just not used to this 4 cylinder DI and it's issues.

Borla Chrome Polisher for Exhaust + Microfiber Application Pad or Towel , it literally just wipes back to new . I had build up for 2 months and it came off almost too easy , unbelievable product . I have the Borla Catback Exhaust so I assumed they would know how to keep them clean and yes they surely do . Highly recommended , it's like magic .
