Depends on how OCD you are about scratches. I used to use a car duster thinking they were fine, but did more research and found that they do indeed scratch the shit out of your top coat. Just because you can't see it from a distance doesn't mean it's not there. Shine a flashlight on your car's surface and tell me what you see.

Dust is indeed abrasive, and dragging it across the surface of your vehicle is a bad idea. You should use a quick detailer to perform as lubricant, encapsulate and lift the dust from the surface. Then you can safely wipe it off with a microfiber towel. If you just use a dry towel or in this case, a california car duster, you're basically just turning the surface of these items into sandpaper as you're picking up the dust particles.
