There seems to be some question as to whether one members transmission woes (noise) has been emanating from the gearbox itself or from somewhere within the bell housing (Throw-out Bearing suspected, clutch pack, pressure plate, etc) which led me to this topic. I'm just curious if the dual mass flywheel could be the culprit as I've been told by diesel mechanics (the dual mass flywheel I am told is designed to reduce vibration in engines below 2000 RPM and is a common item in most Diesel engines) separation of the two discs is a common problem and is known to make noise in cold temperatures. As to why the Ford technicians did not explore this when they pulled and replaced the forum members gearbox makes me ask if this flywheel combination is relatively new to Ford and can we expect more problems or reports of same?

There is no way to know if it will be a problem on any car or become a more common issue.

Stop letting one cars problems out of thousands and thousands built worry you.

If I am correct, this is a forum who's purpose is to keep those who subscribe informed and If I recall, there is more than one member who has concerns. As for me, I'm not worried at all, just trying to generate some good old fashioned discussion among the populace as we have several members who have expertise in this area, let alone are actual mechanical engineers and subject matter experts (I dare say your insights will not be shared by the individuals who are having problems) :amen:

Concerns are not problems. There's not problem yet that people need to be informed of. Pure conjecture and guesses. That's bad information that the Internet has a bad habit of turning into "fact".

The individuals having problems know what their flywheel has came apart? They can't share or not share my "insights" because they don't know.

There's nothing to discuss until the problem, or what's causing the noise, is found. Could it be a flywheel came apart? Possibly but unlikely to just make a noise. Could it be I put shaft bearings, TOB? Just as likely.

I'm sorry if I came across as an ass. I get a bit defensively being mechanical and building cars on things. After watching the 11-14 #8 debacle unfold, and seeing how two or three people can make a small problem seem huge, I hate to see people start assuming and guessing with no information. Then 15 more people with any little noise from under the car starts telling everyone that they have xxx problem and next thing I know, Chevy fans are talking about the junk parts. All because three people made a huge stink. It's happened and will happen again.

Us helicopter pilots will tell you we believe in Murphy's Law, are eternal pessimists when it comes to something going wrong (happens when you fly 50000 parts flying together in loose formation), and it's worse if you happen to have a background in Aeronautical Engineering (a Gear Head with fling wings) as we,re always trying to get ready for the inevitable part to fail at the most inopportune time. The gentleman who has had the tranny woes got me to thinking that it is probably an isolated event but it just baffled me why his shop techs didn't inspect the flywheel assembly before they installed a brand new gearbox hence the subject...figured perhaps someone here might shed some light on the subject who has actual experience with this type of hardware. It's all good
