I am deciding whether to order from local dealership or from a larger dealer that is an hour away. The larger claims they get orders sooner because of how big they are. Is there truth to this?

To a certain extent, yes.

I mean....if you are the largest distributor of anything - you will likely get perks from it.

I am unsure if it trickles down to the "Top Ford Volume Dealer in XXX County"...or even "Top Ford Dealer in Wyoming"......but the big lots likely get some perks, in terms of availability on new platforms.

Orders are scheduled based on allocations. Allocations are given to dealers based on previous sales and current inventory.

A large dealer who pushes Mustangs out the door as fast as he gets them in will receive many more allocations than a small dealer who sells one or two Mustangs a month and has 5-10 sitting on the lot.

Given that, all retail orders are considered every week (once retail orders are turned on) and will be scheduled if parts are available after all the allocations for that week are covered. If you order from a small dealership with few or no allocations, you are at the mercy of Ford's parts supply for the options you choose.

They might get more allocations, which would allow the orders to be scheduled sooner, but there are other factors that influence delivery time. Those other factors include parts availability and transportation time (takes time to get car scheduled to be transported and the actual time to go from the plant to the dealership).

Before ordering from that dealer, it might be good to understand what their allocation looks like around the time you order.

I ordered mine from the largest volume Ford dealer in my state. And Pennsylvania is a pretty big state. I still don't have a VIN lol.

Keep in mind, there's more to the buying experience than how quickly you'll get your car.

Having a relationship with a dealer can be easier with a smaller dealer than a larger one.

Or as the saying goes, big fish small pond, little fish big pond.

It just depends on what you're after.
