I was changing my oil today and noticed some rubber hanging out near the under fender lining of my drivers front wheel. Saw some ribbing on it and immediately thought “belt.” Wouldn’t you know it, my accessory belt filleted itself and lost about 1/3 of its width. Car has 8,000 miles on it...

not taking it to the dealer for this but changing the belt looks like a nightmare with all of the crap in the way.

Anyone else have this happen?

I'd investigate that ASAP, you probably have a pulley wobbling with something about to fail soon if it's tearing off half the belt. Primary suspect is the water pump that you have in your picture, but it could be any of them. A/C is run on the belt closest to the timing cover so it won't be that.

Oh joy. Would the wiggle be evident with the engine at idle or should I pull the belt and start checking for play in the pulleys by hand?

Got the belt off, doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with the tightness of the pulleys, however both my crank pulley and water pump pulley have damage to the belt mating ribs throughout. Surely this couldn’t have been caused by the belt itself?

obviously I’m replacing the belt to get the car to move but at this point I’m wondering if these pulleys need to be replaced by the dealership else this will just keep happening.

Yikes. Looks like something got caught up in between the belt and the pulleys. Following along to see how you resolve it.

Scheduled to drop it off next week to let the dealer handle it. I busted my knuckles up enough just getting the new belt in, can’t imagine doing that harmonic balancer without many swears.

from my previous experience with this service department I’ll probably end up getting my car back painted a different color or missing a few parts. Sigh.
