Quite normal. Volvo, Audi, Bmw etc all do the same. No service = no breakdown cover nor warranty. But in Germany it only works on the VIN. In the UK and most other countries its all recorded on the reg number as well as the VIN.

It's scary!
Unfortunately, I have had the displeasure in owning two of them. First good, 2nd total crap and nothing but problem (despite new!).

Seriously though, Bmw's are very nice care to look at, sit in, drive etc. But the amount of problems they have are scary stuff and here in Germany people are really upset with them.
When I first moved to Germany in 2010 I wanted a Volvo (as always) but too expensive so went for a used 2007 330D. Small, but great car, engine, performance (tuned by previus owner - a doctor) etc. Thought I go for another Bmw when I had to change. So got a new 2011 535D. Nice car....but I had NOTHING but problems with it. Rained in on both left and right side, back seat only. Steering column changed twice. Rear silencer changed twice. Never felt like it had 300 hp, drank a lot more fuel than advertised (about 40% more!). Broke down in Belgium. Main computer failure. I was blamed for "playing with it" so warranty would not take it. Cost me thousands. Told Bmw to go f... them selves. Went to Audi. Never been happier! Next year, another one.
Wife sticks to Volvo's though (well I do have one, but is 30 yrs old)

I ended up buying a 2003 BMW beater 325 when I got to Germany. It has been nothing but a mechanical nightmare. I just figured under bumper to bumper it'd be ok....and that will be frequent!

Hehe..."Bumber to Bumber" doesn't exist in Europe. Sorry to say.
Wife's first car in Germany was a small 2010 118D. Great little car, she even commented on how good it was to drive. While we had no problems, once we sold the car (for a Volvo!), our friend who bought it had lots of issues. Biggest one....engine blew up (chain, snapped). Bmw said "not our problem". Long story short, Bmw paid 75% for new engine.
A friend of mine here bought a new 640D....guess what happened. Engine blew up! Bmw did not pay more than 30% on his. Another one that told them to go f...themselves. Bought an E-class 350 Cdi.
Seriously though, people have started to realize that once Bmw have your money, that's it. Your on your own.

Didn't know that. The warranty is a huge selling point back in the US. You'd think that they would offer the same in Germany.

They refused me cover despite being under warranty. Friends car were both out of warranty. Like a time bomb!

Damn, Germany is a stickler about contracts with military members overseas. Why aren't they sticklers for the warrantys in Germany?
BMWS would be much harder sales in the US without their 4 yr bumper to bumper with oil changes and other wearable parts.
