Most car's speedo in america shows slightly higher, to help deter you in speeding. So I believe the cruise control wasn't set to compensate for that, so your setting the cruise control to the actual speed but the speedo is still showing it's slightly higher calibration.

I compared my speedo to a Garmin GPS that read speed to 1/10 MPH. I have the 19" wheels with the 255/40-19 Pirelli tires front and rear. Here's the results ... speedo reads pretty darn close.

Speedo @50 - GPS @49.2
Speedo @70 - GPS @69.8
Speedo @100 - GPS @100

Yeah, I've got it like that in my car as well. You're not alone.

Could it be the angle you're at? It might sound stupid, but I noticed the same thing when I was driving. When I moved my head so I was looking directly at the speedo (rather than the normal angle from being centered in the drivers seat), it matched cruise control.
I was going to say the same thing. Normally you are looking at the speedo at an angle so if you move your head to be looking directly at it, it should match. Mine does when I do that but normally it looks like it is off 1-2 MPH

Its definitely not the angle. I had that issue in my F150 but I was sitting considerably further from the cluster. I guess I just assumed Ford has made so many certified calibrated speedos (PI Crown Vic's) the speedo would be spot on. Just odd to me.

I'd consider my speedo pretty much spot-on based on the measurements I took shown in post #4. The speedo reading might be slightly different on different Mustangs based on which wheel tire option they have on them, unless Ford actually changes the speedo calibration for based on the wheel/tire combos used.

Not stupid at all, man. You've nailed precisely what it is. I don't believe there's anything mechanically wrong with everyone's speedometers or our car's computer. I think the two main gauge pods, Tachometer and Speedometer, have been installed with a slight misalignment from the factory.

Both the RPM and MPH pods are in there straight as an arrow, 90 degrees top to bottom and horizontally flat...and that's the problem. From where the driver is positioned and the driver's natural eye-line, these gauges aren't appearing accurate. The gauges only give an accurate reading if you move your head and look at them head-on.

This could be easily corrected. If both pods were horizontally tilted slightly inward a few degrees toward the driver's natural eye-line, we'd have analog gauges that appear more accurate to the eye.

What do you guys think? Is that our solution? Will skew those gauges towards our eyes do the trick? Is it something that can be done? Hey, @FordService - can we get this fixed?

I set my cruise control to 65 MPH (showing on the Information Display) the other day on a nice flat road. Let it stable out and looked closely at my speedometer with my face directly head-on to the speedo so there was no needle parallax. The needle was maybe 1/2 needle width above the 65 has mark on the speedo.

One thing to consider in the accuracy of the speedo and the accuracy of the cruies setting and speedo needle postion is what wheel/tire package is on the car - which are all close to the same diameter tire, but not exact. Since there are a few different factory options, it's possible Ford just calibrated the speedos to one size and therefore some are slightly off compared to others. I have the 19" wheels with the 255/40-19 Pirelli tires.

I finally took my 17 RS3 onto the highway last night, and noted the same thing. Glad I saw this thread because my initial thought was it was a calibration issue from Roush. The digital cruise reading is consistently 4mph lower than the spedo.

Edit: I noted some folks talking about gauge pod and face. I have Roush gauges, and I have the same issue. Unless it is an issue with the actual enclosure alignment?
