crackly USB-connected iPod/iPhone music?

I generally use Bluetooth to listen to music from my iPhone and all is good. However, if I connect an iPhone or iPad via a USB cable and try and play music, it is all crackly.

Anyone else have this problem ?

Diagnose:
- Does this happen regardless of which USB you plug into?
- Does this happen when you use a different cord to connect?

If one of the two change the outcome... there you go.

Can't tell you how many people came to my audio shop in a rage that the radio I installed for them was bad but then you use another cord and - poof - it's perfect.
