Apparently my state (NH) says it's illegal to have a cutout.

Which means that as long as you either keep both exhaust paths inside the muffler or otherwise provide separate muffling for both paths you're still good.

My '01 Maxima "Anniversary Edition" had a dual-mode muffler mainly to help claim a few more HP for bragging rights over the base models and supposedly let out a little more growl. I couldn't ever tell that it worked the way claimed.

Eventually I remove it and cut it open to see what made it tick (or not). Yellow flow is all of the time. The red flow arrows only apply when the valve is open, and only then do both exhaust tips have anything coming out them. Any "multi-mode" muffler is going to be more or less similar inside, differences being in exact flow paths and valve actuation.

The Corvette and Camaro "NPP" exhausts are kind of pricy (Camaro, ~$900), probably a result of being electronically controlled. But they do work.
