Hey guys, faced this problem a few weeks ago where I got to work, reversed in parking spot, pressed brakes and ……….clunk. I though something just shifted and it’ll go away so I decided to recreate the situation again. Went forward a bit pressed on the brakes and clunk again, went back pressed on brakes and it just keeps clunking on that first initial brake in new direction. It does it on both sides in the front end. I have 2017 mustang gt non performance so it’s 4 piston brakes in the front. I disassembled the brakes yesterday and pads look quite new still a lot of thread left and I couldn’t see anything that could be making a clunky noise. The only thing that I’ve noticed is that outer brake pad was looser than inner and I was able to wiggle it more up and down and take it out by hand where with the inner I just took the whole caliber off to slide that one out. Also the factory grease completely dried out. Its not control arm. And everything is stock and never been touched. I couldn’t find anybody else with mustang having this issue only Honda, anybody had this happen to them?

If it's the front end making the clunks - check the upper strut mounts. Also check for loose sway bar links.

I had somewhat the same kind of issue but only seemed like it was going forward and was on the drivers side. I took apart my brake caliper and pads, loosened all bolts and retorqued everything while I had it on a drive on lift, push pulled on all items and still didn’t solve the issue.. I can’t remember who it was but someone on here said they had the same issue and it was the front tension link ball joint. I removed the drivers side and it was definitely loose so I ordered a new set from steeda installed and no more noise.

Just an update incase anyone else is having this issue. Mine turned out to be my brake pads. They had plenty of material left on the rotor mating surface. However, the metal backing that is on the pad had separated. I’m not sure if this was causing the noise in conjunction with the pin style pad retention or what but changing the pads resolved my issue. Prior to changing the pads I checked and made sure everything was tight and none of the ball joints or tie rods had any slop. Like the OP said, it sounded exactly like the brake pads shifting in the caliper as soon as the brakes were applied. I will add that it would only occur with a light to medium pedal press. It wouldn’t do it if you press the pedal down hard and fast. I went with Powerstop Z26 pads. So far I couldn’t be happier with them. I searched for info on this for months and no one seemed to have a definitive answer. I hope this helps someone.
