a slightly damp flannel, a hint of dishwashing liquid and just lightly rubbed the rim with it. Would plan to repeat the process about every 4000 miles

similar....microfiber towel ( light color so you can see what you are removing), hot water, not too damn, no soap unless it"s really dirty. In that case some Tuff Tuff sprayed into the warm towel.....

My mother would tell you to take Shaklee Basic H, dilute in water, apply to a unstarched t-shirt fabric such as an undershirt, use the shirt wet to moisten the area you wish to clean. Then lightly... LIGHTLY (like weight of t-shirt plus a teeny press) circular motion the area. I did not make this up... I just asked her.
