Does anyone know why the instrument panel badge with chassis number inside the car does not match the last 4 digits of the vin number?

Because one is the VIN number and the other is a chassis number.

VIN keeps track of how many Mustang's, Chasis how many Mach 1's, this is a guess.

From an earlier post, VIN is the vehicle identification, the "Unique chassis" is pulled from a box randomly with the next batch (box) brought in when it's empty.
