Just get some 0000 steel wool and use an APC of your choice. You can use some spray wax if you want after cleaned to "protect" them. Also at Home Depot or Wal-mart you can find some stuff called Bar Keepers Friend. It is amazing at making stainless steel look brand new again

I've never had that experience and I use it weekly on our pots and pans. I use the liquid version so it may be different.

I use the dry stuff and it has ruined some clothes b/4 I figured out the source. I figured this out one time when I noticed a couple spots on a t-shirt. I grabbed the sponge without thinking about the the BKF on it to try to dilute whatever was on my shirt. I went from a few spots to a big area that was bleached out.
I too use it on my stnls skillets, not my cars. I use Mothers metal polish on my stnls tips and some alum on my motorcycle.

I only use nevr dull wadding polish on my exhausts. Always works great! I never cared for BKF.
