Has anybody even tried to swap out the lights in the base model gauge cluster?

I'd be interested to know this also. I really would like mine red like I had in my Subaru.

I searched the forum and google for this before buying a base mustang myself. I wouldn't think that Ford would make 2 separate units, one to have multi-color LEDs, and another to only have the base white LEDs. That would cost more money to have 2 different hardware units, and being that the guage cluster on all S550s have the screen/computer built into them, I'd think that Ford just simply removes certain menus based on the car, which would leave the menu's hidden in there somewhere.

On the outgoing S197 model, I read where some people swapped the gauge cluster for a premium cluster and it worked. I did find a thread where a couple people were trying to get MyColor to work by attempting to unlock menus in the guages. Last I saw, they weren't able to get MyColor to unlock, even when using the VIN of a premium model car.

MyColor is really the only feature I miss from my premium 2010 Mustang. Otherwise I feel the base interior is plenty good on these cars. I'll see if I can dig that thread up at some point, but I'm out of the country right now.

I had a 13 V6 premium. On the speedo and tach there was a colored ring that allowed you to change colors. That isn't in the base gauges. My guess is that you would need a premium cluster from an EB or GT and have it reprogrammed to work with your car. A lot of people did this in the 11-14 mustangs. I think this swap would be a lot easier since the base already has the track apps and stuff so it might just be plug and play. The last gen base mustang had all analog gauges so the swap required a lot more work to get it to function properly.
