Barton shifter

Please do a report on the Barton, very close to buying One a few months back, what did Mike say about it ?

I hated the shift in this car so much i was considering a MY18 auto (or even a MY17), but the cost to get out of my car (which otherwise i love) to get into another would be extortionate, especially a MY18. So i thought i'd try and do something about it instead.

I went with the Barton because I'd read a lot of bad things about the Steeda Tri-ax in the US part of the forum and didn't want to risk it. Price was pretty much the same. The choice was between Barton and MGW and tbh Mike had the Barton in stock so that's what sealed it

Mike said he had it in his car, and he liked it because it looked stock and kept the lift reverse mechanism, which i agreed. He said any of the cheap (part mechanism) short shift kits are a waste of time and just really notchy.

When i got there, they opened the box and realised that barton had changed the design and it now didn't look stock, and was now push down reverse. :doh:

Luckily it looks pretty sick so besides having to 'declare' it to the wife, i'm not fussed. the push to reverse is annoying but since I rarely reverse it's not the end of the world.

I do think the glossy black looks a little out of place though, especially with the chrome surround so i think i might have to have that sorted somehow (the surround).

With regards to the shifter itself, it's clearly nicer than stock. a very solid & satisfying shift. I had it chassis mounted as I don't use the car on the track or anything and trans mounting is supposed to cause NVH issues.

Unfortunately it didn't improve 1st to 2nd as much as i'd liked it to have, but it is better and doesn't make me regret getting a manual every time i shift. Part of that is the shift itself, and part is probably in my head knowing it's an expensive mod. Either way, end result is achieved, i no longer want an auto

Would i recommend it? yes, definitely. Is it worth the pricetag? probably not, but if you use that logic no mustang mods are worth it cos everything is so stupidly overpriced (exception being steeda clutch spring :lol. fitting cost was virtually nothing as they did the Pedders coilovers at the same time, both in 3hrs labour which is pretty much what i'd have expected to pay for just the coilovers.

If you've got a spare £500 and hate the factory shift, go for it. If the shift isn't a deal-breaker, there are probably better things to spend the cash on.
Funnily enough, those were exactly Mikes words before I booked it in, honesty like that is so refreshing and I'll definitely be taking my car back.

There's 2 versions of this shifter one retains the collar and looks stock. The other is push down with a blade shaft. Mikes a genuinely helpful guy. Took mine for a surprisingly fast test drive

ah ok, that explains it. they seemed genuinely shocked when they opened the box, he did say they've only fitted a few. not a particularly popular mod.

I think it's a great mod. Not 100% happy with the way my g/box operates I was also thinking of getting an auto until I saw the price of the MY18 A10

Just got my Barton Hybrid 3 shifter with pull up from American Muscle. Will be fitting on Wednesday next week along with my Steeda rear mounts/Pedders with Nige conversion kit for track use only.
