Reddit hates me for this...

I hate anime. There's only 3 Japanese cartoons I like out of the sea Japan makes.
BUT! I always thought Japan was better than the U.S. Cartoons, cars, video games. Now I have a dislike towards Japan. Their TV is trash, they don't make fun cars, and they don't like us (had foreign exhange students in my high school, 1940s and 50s are a blur to them [how convenient when we pumped money and technology into them so Ford and GM were right to be pissed at U.S. gov't for forcing them to teach Japan]).

I don't get it! What is there to like about Japan?!?!?!?

Well, girls are cute and won't age until menopause
Gaijin Hunters
Anime is miss or hit
Certain Japanese cars are cool, especially for the price (Z's, Miata's, etc)

Would like to go, more so I can add some authenticity to my stories, although nowhere compares to America and it's cars

JDMs are pretty cool. I just don't get the hype.

and the "content" on 20c Fox is highbrow and educational?
Watch the Kayoh-bi Gekijoh for real drama (that's Samurai period dramas that airs about 3pm on Tuesday, and also thurs, on TBS).

The food quality is quite good. Excellent (flavor, fresh) vegs and fish and chicken. If you're looking for beef it's not all that common and generally has a 'product of Austrailia' stamped on it.

BTW 'anime' is pronounced Ahh Knee Meh, not Annie May. Grew up watching DragonBall (doragon-bahru), Doraimon, and various soccer/school themed dramatizations.

The people are almost universally polite and courteous even if inside they are annoyed at 'whitey'. But if you're black/brown, Korean or lesser Asiatic (got help you if Filipino) though, you will more often run into overt acts of disrespect. Japanese are seriously racist.

They don't have the hood rat problem endemic to American inner cities. A girl can walk across Shinjuku at 2am safely.

I spent 17 years there and went to Japanese public school from K-9th.

they don't make fun cars,
you haven't been paying attention. Honda City. Nissan Skyline. Toyota Supra and Celica, Subaru WRX. Yes all cars worldwide look the same now, some kind of boxy high-roof 4-door or bean shaped.

Yes Americans taught them quality control and process improvement. Have you read W. Edwards Deming's book? We had it here first but typical of lazy and entitled American workers and Unions were more interested the fast buck and discarded the principles. It's not the Japanese fault they took to the practice and made it their own (Kaizen) and adhere to it like a religion.

In western/American thought the individual is above the group. This has certain benefits. But when the individual is secondary to the group, you get a different set of benefits. Japan has long adopted the latter.

Anything a Jersey Boy here should know about visiting? Also, where's somewhere outside the big cities you recommend going to?

probably need a new thread for Japan Travel-planning...

Unless you have decent command of Japanese getting outside a major metro means trouble communicating. Someone 25-45 age is generally a good chance of them at least understanding your English and possibly getting a useful response in kind. Over 60 and your chances plummet.

Try to schedule your trip for hitting some of the Matsu-ri - ie religious celebration. Shi-koku has some famous ones and of course Oh-Bon (mid Aug) is huge everywhere.

If you want to see authentic Japanese go to the northern end of Honshu (eg. Aomori, Iwate) athough that might take too long. Or from Tokyo head to Sendai and then over to Niigata. (Edit: not to suggest there isn't lots to see/do west and south of Kyoto).

Whatever you do, you ALWAYS take your shoes off in the foyer and ALWAYS scrub yourself clean in the ante-shower before you drop into the hot tub. Get used to the notion of being on display and being watched while soaping up (hey, white man dingus bigger than Japanese pecker) but always use your washcloth for a modicum of privacy. Full-on football locker room swinging dick on display is a big no-no.

Everything in Japan costs 3-10x what it costs here in USA.

Makes sense, now I gotta learn Japanese myself

Hmm, interesting, definitely considering it

Sounds fun, also wonder if I can rent a manual Skyline

Really going above and beyond for some satire here.

What does professional gaming have to do with casual enjoyment? If I'm older than most major league athletes, does that mean I can't shoot hoops in my driveway, play football with my friends, or toss a baseball around?
My point was just that video games are huge. That market surpassed the movie industry like 15 years ago.

sorry I don't have knowledge on that. When I go back I use train/bus/friends. But for any touring I'd use a motorcycle.
Not a fan of Public Transportation

Gotcha, time to learn to ride then
