I currently use a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD. It is an ancient phone relative to the modern rate of technology obsolescence. It currently has Android V4 (kit kat) operating system. From the little bit of searching I've done, Android Auto is only compatible with V5 or higher. Short of rooting my phone and putting V5 on it (if that is even possible), is there any way I can get Android Auto to work in my car? I'd really like to be able to integrate Google Maps with my screen without spending the money to upgrade my phone as well. I like the phone I have, and it does everything I need it to do, except a few things with my new car obviously. We did link up my girlfriends phone with the car and it is running V5, and the maps integration is awesome. Why anyone would spend $800 for the factory nav is beyond me, unless you are constantly traveling for work.

Android auto requires android 5.0 or newer. Since AA isn't even available yet, don't worry about upgrading the phone until the system works.

Then grab a new Nexus (5X/6P are both on significant discounts, or new ones will be out shortly).

Android Auto is certainly available. We used it the other day with my girlfriends phone (Droid Turbo 2). Plugged her phone into the usb port and an Android Auto icon popped up on the cars touch screen. We used it for the navigation.

Is a phone as old as mine compatible? I'm not very up to date technology wise so pardon my ignorance.

If you've never rooted or flashed a ROM it probably isn't worth it. You can brick a phone easy enough with a few misclicks of your mouse. Even some of the "tools" that are available can make a good phone unusable.

Check out swappa.com for great deals on used devices. Or do as one poster suggested and pick up a Nexus 5X or 6P, I own both and they are great. You can sell your phone on swappa once you get a new one to recoup some cash quickly.
