First off, as an excuse let me say that aside from being a girlie-man, I'm a bit under the weather and not doing well with some medication. So I was impaired (and not in a good way) when doing this.
I received my Speeda clutch spring last week. I didn't think the clutch was bad enough to complain, but there were some obvious issues in my ability to smoothly drive the car, and so with all of the rave reviews, I bought one. $20 for a $1 spring, plus shipping, is a bit much, but then if I had to source a proper sized spring myself, it would have been a huge effort and for all I know, they had a bunch of these custom made for them, and hey, they need to make a profit. And $20 on a $40K car isn't much. But seriously guys, could you not be bothered to stick a 5 cent instruction paper in there? I had to go online and download the instructions. Which didn't work for me. Possibly because I didn't have the proper tool (needle-nose locking pliers) nor the hand strength (see excuses above) to do it.
So I went to youtube. First up, a CJPony demo of how to do it. Big burly guy (Mike?) did it one handed in less time than it took me to write "so I went to youtube". Easy-peasy. I tried again. No joy.
So I looked for some other videos. One guy, a skinny little middle-aged fart like myself, struggled with it for several minutes and grew quite frustrated before he finally wedged it off. OK, I felt better. Still, I didn't have the right tool. Looked for another video, and a younger guy also struggled with it before giving up on trying to compress the spring and just knocked it sideways off the perch.
Thinking of different options, I finally got my adjustable BAP which although too big to easily get in there, provides me with a bunch of leverage. I had to rotate the spring to get the gap between coils where I could get a handle on it.
With a piece of wood jammed between the clutch pedal and seat to keep it depressed, I was able to compress the spring and then slid it off the perch. A combination of all three videos, including the profanity and ending with the thing shooting across the car, spreading grease on the carpet and floor mat.
Installation with that soft spring was much, much easier.
Getting old sucks.
