you know the car doesn't have to be running to add time to the readout, ignition just needs to be on, like listening to the radio while cleaning the car.
That was pretty much all drive. I don't think I have ever had my car parked with the ignition on. It's either running and I am driving it, or it's parked.

I don't look for ways to waste gas, if that is your question. I don't run around in a lower gear than necessary because I think it sounds cool, or anything like that.

I do pass when I get the opportunity, enjoy occasionally going from 0-60 more quickly than I need to, and romp on it a little on the freeway entrance ramps.

But mostly, I just drive - and 60-70% of that driving is on 65-70mph highways. Even with the 3.55 gears it is pretty easy for me to average 25-26mpg for steady-state cruising at those speeds.

So to get this good mpg i would need to buy the automatic transmission?
Thanks

I am not sure how you got there. My current car is an auto, but my last Mustang was a stick, and I got good mileage in that one, too.

I think that the mileage you get depends almost entirely on a combination of where you drive and how you drive. If you live and drive in downtown Manhattan, or LA, Houston, San Francisco, etc there is very little you can do to get "great" gas mileage. If you drive it like you are 16 and in a borrowed car, you aren't going to get great gas mileage, even if you are primarily on the highway.

For myself, if I am on the freeway and not in traffic, I have the cruise control on - and I don't generally speed while driving for work.

That's how it works for me, anyway.

I've got a manual with the 3.55 gears and also average mid 25 to low 26 on the highway going 75-80mph.

Personal best from this past weekend going to Michigan was 26.4mpg :D

Cruise control doesn't really save gas; it just to maintain speed. I only use it if a cop is in front, or for a minute or so every 3 hours or so of continuous driving (which rarely happens, due to stops). If you want to save gas, it's always more fuel efficient to slow down a little over hills. And if you want to make up for that lost time (and if safe for your license), speed up a little on dowhhills.
