TL;DR / Solution

For 2021+ S550 Mustangs with the wired rear buckle sensors, this allows the rear buckle/receptacle assemblies to be completely removed when installing a rear seat delete instead of leaving the wired buckles plugged in to prevent DTCs.

Using FORScan, change the following values:

IPC 720-02-02:
xxx4 xxxx β†’ xxx0 xxxx

RCM 737-02-01:
xxxx xxxx 7xxx β†’ xxxx xxxx 1xxx

Change only those identified values, not the entire As-Built lines.

Then:

1. Power the car down.
2. Unplug both rear buckle sensors.
3. Power the car back up.
4. Clear any existing DTCs.
5. Perform a fresh DTC scan.

Tested successfully on my 2022 Mach 1: both rear buckle sensors unplugged with no DTCs.

You can now fully remove the rear female buckle/receptacle assemblies for the rear seat delete.

Back up your original As-Built before making any changes.

TL;DR

Based on a comparison of complete factory As-Built data from 33 S550 Mustangs, the proposed 2021+ rear-seat-delete configuration changes are:

IPC 720-02-02
xxx4 xxxx -> xxx0 xxxx

RCM 737-02-01
xxxx xxxx 7xxx -> xxxx xxxx 1xxx

For the IPC, change only the indicated 4 to 0 and let FORScan calculate the checksum.

For the RCM, the complete factory target value was identical across the entire dataset, so the full factory RSD value can also be used:

C768 ED3B 7008 -> C768 ED3B 10A8

There were no exceptions to the relevant pattern in the 33-car sample, and I did not find another universal As-Built setting that consistently separated the 2021+ four-seat cars from the factory RSD/pre-2021 configuration.

Do not copy any other As-Built values from a donor car.

Background

I’ve been researching the rear seat-belt monitoring issue that comes up when installing a rear seat delete in 2021+ S550 Mustangs.

On these cars, removing and unplugging the rear buckle sensors can cause a rear seat-belt system warning. The workaround people have generally used has been to leave the rear buckle electronics connected and hide them underneath the rear seat delete.

I wanted to figure out how Ford handled this on cars that actually came with a rear seat delete from the factory.

I started with Ford’s own Mustang workshop/service information instead of randomly searching As-Built values. Ford identifies the IPC as module 720 and the RCM as module 737, and BeltMinder/seat-belt reminder configuration functions are associated with those modules.

The service information does not specifically state that rear seat delete coding is located at 720-02-02 and 737-02-01. What it did was narrow down which modules were relevant. The exact As-Built addresses and values were then isolated by comparing factory production data.

Dataset

I collected and compared the complete factory As-Built files from 33 S550 Mustangs spanning 2019–2023.

18 Mach 1s from 2021–2023:

12 four-seat cars
6 factory rear-seat-delete cars

The 12 four-seat Mach 1 controls included 8 Recaro cars and 4 comfort-seat cars, with manual and automatic transmissions and both Handling Package and non-Handling Package configurations represented.

9 GT500s from 2020–2022:

3 Recaro four-seat GT500s
3 comfort-seat four-seat GT500s
3 factory Carbon Fiber Track Package cars with the rear seat delete

That gave me one Recaro four-seat GT500, one comfort-seat four-seat GT500, and one CFTP/RSD GT500 for each of the 2020, 2021, and 2022 model years.

6 GT350s from 2019–2020:

2 Recaro four-seat GT350s
2 comfort-seat four-seat GT350s
2 factory GT350Rs with the rear seat delete

That gave me one Recaro GT350, one comfort-seat GT350, and one GT350R for both 2019 and 2020.

In total, the dataset contains 21 four-seat cars and 12 factory rear-seat-delete cars if the Mach 1 RSD, GT500 CFTP, and GT350R groups are combined.

The older GT350s and 2020 GT500s were especially useful because they provided controls from before the newer 2021+ rear seat-belt monitoring configuration.

How the parameters were found

I compared the complete As-Built files rather than only looking at a couple of suspected restraint-related addresses.

Across the dataset, the universal 2021+ four-seat versus factory-RSD/pre-2021 difference consistently came down to two locations.

FIRST:

IPC 720-02-02

2021+ four-seat configuration:

xxx4 xxxx

Factory RSD / earlier configuration:

xxx0 xxxx

Universal change:

xxx4 xxxx -> xxx0 xxxx

Only the indicated 4 changes to 0.

The rest of the IPC line varies depending on the individual vehicle’s equipment, so I would not recommend copying an entire IPC line from another car.

Instead, change only the universal 4 to 0 and let FORScan calculate the proper checksum for that particular vehicle.

SECOND:

RCM 737-02-01

2021+ four-seat configuration:

xxxx xxxx 7xxx

Factory RSD / earlier configuration:

xxxx xxxx 1xxx

Universal change:

xxxx xxxx 7xxx -> xxxx xxxx 1xxx

The actual configuration change is the indicated 7 changing to 1.

The RCM is different from the IPC because the complete 737-02-01 line was invariant throughout the 33-car dataset.

It appeared in only two forms:

2021+ four-seat:

C768 ED3B 7008

Factory RSD / pre-2021 state:

C768 ED3B 10A8

Every applicable 2021+ four-seat car in the dataset used C768 ED3B 7008.

Every applicable factory-RSD or pre-2021 car used C768 ED3B 10A8.

There were no exceptions.

Because of that, the complete factory RSD RCM value can reasonably be copied directly:

C768 ED3B 7008 -> C768 ED3B 10A8

You could alternatively change only the 7 to 1 and allow FORScan to recalculate the checksum, but unlike the IPC, the complete RCM target value is known and was identical across every applicable car in the dataset.

Production pattern

The production pattern was extremely consistent.

All of the 2021+ four-seat Mach 1 and GT500 examples used the 4 / 7 configuration.

All of the 2021+ factory-RSD Mach 1 and GT500 examples used the 0 / 1 configuration.

The 2019–2020 cars also used the 0 / 1 state regardless of whether they physically had a rear seat.

That is important because it suggests these values relate to Ford’s newer 2021+ rear-belt-monitoring architecture rather than simply meaning β€œrear seat installed” or β€œrear seat deleted.”

The GT500 comparison is especially useful.

For 2020, before the newer monitoring configuration appeared in the dataset, both the four-seat GT500s and CFTP/RSD GT500 used the older 0 / 1 configuration.

Beginning in 2021, the four-seat GT500s switched to the 4 / 7 configuration while the factory CFTP/RSD cars remained at 0 / 1.

The exact same split repeated in 2022.

The Mach 1 data reproduced that same four-seat-versus-RSD pattern across 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Other As-Built differences

I found other differences between regular GT500s and CFTP cars and between GT350s and GT350Rs.

However, those differences existed independently of the 2021 rear-belt-monitoring transition and were not reproduced across the factory Mach 1 rear-seat-delete cars.

Those appear to be CFTP/GT350R package-specific configuration rather than universal rear-seat-delete coding.

I would not change any of those values.

After comparing the complete As-Built files, I did not find a third universal setting that consistently separated the 2021+ four-seat cars from the factory RSD/pre-2021 configuration.

My 2022 Mach 1 example

IPC 720-02-02

Current:

4884 8C83

Universal change:

4 -> 0

Expected after FORScan checksum update:

4880 8C7F

RCM 737-02-01

Current:

C768 ED3B 7008

Universal change:

7 -> 1

Factory target value:

C768 ED3B 10A8

Proposed FORScan RSD changes

FIRST:

Why I think these are the relevant settings

Ford’s service information points to the IPC and RCM as the modules involved with BeltMinder/seat-belt reminder configuration, while the factory As-Built comparison isolated the exact addresses and bits within those modules.

The service information supports the module-level theory; the 33-car production dataset provides the exact As-Built evidence.

Important disclaimer

This is not an official Ford retrofit procedure.

The factory-data correlation is extremely strong, but I have not yet completed real-world validation on a converted car.

Anyone testing this should save the original IPC and RCM As-Built files first and make only the two changes listed above.

After writing the values:

Key-cycle the vehicle.

Re-read 720-02-02 and 737-02-01 to confirm the stored values.

Perform a complete DTC scan.

Verify normal restraint-system and instrument-cluster operation.

For the first test, I would leave the rear buckle sensors connected.

If everything remains clean, the more important second test would be disconnecting the rear buckle sensors and confirming that no rear-belt-monitor or restraint-system faults return.

If anyone tests this, please post:

Vehicle/model year

Whether the car originally had four seats or factory RSD

Original 720-02-02 value

New 720-02-02 value after FORScan writes it

Original 737-02-01 value

New 737-02-01 value after FORScan writes it

Any DTCs immediately after programming

Whether the DTCs clear and remain gone

Whether the rear buckle sensors were connected or disconnected

Whether any rear BeltMinder warning appears afterward

If this works the way the factory data suggests, it could eliminate the need to retain the rear buckle sensors underneath an aftermarket/Ford Performance rear seat delete.

Hands-On Test Results β€” 2021+ Mach 1 / GT500 RSD FORScan Coding

I tested the two As-Built changes I identified from comparing the factory data, and the results were pretty interesting.

This was tested on my 2022 Mach 1, which is originally a four-seat car. The rear smart-buckle sensors were still physically installed and plugged in for this first test.

Before touching anything, I did a complete FORScan DTC scan. The car had zero DTCs. I also backed up the complete IPC and RCM As-Built before making any changes.

ORIGINAL FACTORY VALUES

IPC 720-02-02:
4884 8C83

RCM 737-02-01:
C768 ED3B 7008

RSD-STYLE CHANGES

FIRST β€” IPC 720-02-02

Changed the universal configuration digit:

xxx4 xxxx -> xxx0 xxxx

I manually changed only the 4 to 0 and left the existing checksum alone.

FORScan automatically recalculated the checksum and stored:

4880 8C7F

That was exactly the value predicted from the factory RSD data.

SECOND β€” RCM 737-02-01

Changed the universal configuration digit:

xxxx xxxx 7xxx -> xxxx xxxx 1xxx

Again, I manually changed only the 7 to 1 and let FORScan calculate the checksum.

FORScan stored:

C768 ED3B 10A8

Again, exactly the factory RSD/pre-2021 value predicted from the As-Built research.

WHAT HAPPENED

After both changes were written, I key-cycled the car and performed a complete DTC scan.

There were a few communication/data DTCs from the programming process. Those were marked as previously set and not present at the time of the scan.

More importantly, the RCM set two active DTCs:

B140C:4A-8B
Second Row Driver Side Seatbelt Sensor
Incorrect Component Installed

B140D:4A-8B
Second Row Passenger Side Seatbelt Sensor
Incorrect Component Installed

Both were listed as present at the time of the scan.

I cleared all DTCs and scanned the entire car again.

All of the temporary communication/programming DTCs disappeared.

The only two codes that immediately returned were:

B140C β€” Second Row Driver Side Seatbelt Sensor β€” Incorrect Component Installed

B140D β€” Second Row Passenger Side Seatbelt Sensor β€” Incorrect Component Installed

WHAT THIS APPEARS TO SHOW

This is a pretty interesting result because the RCM did not report the sensors as missing or open circuit.

It specifically identified both of the connected 2021+ rear smart-buckle sensors as:

β€œIncorrect Component Installed.”

That happened only after changing the IPC and RCM into the factory RSD/pre-2021 configuration.

So, at this point, my hands-on results are:

Four-seat coding + smart rear sensors connected:
No DTCs

RSD coding + smart rear sensors connected:
B140C/B140D β€” Incorrect Component Installed

That strongly suggests that the factory RSD configuration does not expect the 2021+ smart rear-buckle sensors to be present.

RESTORING THE CAR

Since I could not physically unplug the rear buckle sensors today, I restored both modules to their exact original factory values.

IPC 720-02-02:

4880 8C7F -> 4884 8C83

RCM 737-02-01:

C768 ED3B 10A8 -> C768 ED3B 7008

After restoring the original coding, I cleared the programming-related DTCs and rescanned the entire vehicle.

Final result:

Zero DTCs.

Every module, including the IPC and RCM, returned to β€œNone.”

So the experiment was completely reversible and the car is now back to exactly where it started.

WHAT THE TEST CONFIRMED

A few things are now confirmed from actual hands-on testing:

1. Both researched As-Built changes successfully write to the car.
2. FORScan automatically recalculates the checksums exactly as predicted.

IPC:
4884 8C83 -> 4880 8C7F

RCM:
C768 ED3B 7008 -> C768 ED3B 10A8

3. Changing to the factory RSD-style configuration causes the RCM to specifically reject the still-connected 2021+ rear smart-buckle sensors as β€œIncorrect Component Installed.”
4. Restoring the original four-seat coding immediately returns the system to normal and the car becomes completely DTC-free again.

THE ONE TEST STILL LEFT

The next test is now pretty obvious:

RSD coding + rear smart-buckle sensors disconnected = ?

When I can access the connectors, I plan to unplug both rear buckle sensors with the ignition off, apply the same two RSD As-Built changes again, clear any programming DTCs, key-cycle the car, and perform another complete scan.

If the RCM remains completely clean with the sensors physically absent, that would be very strong functional confirmation that these two As-Built changes are the factory-style solution for a 2021+ rear seat delete.

For now, though, the first hands-on test definitely showed that leaving the 2021+ smart buckle sensors plugged in while using the factory RSD coding is not the correct combination.

Tonight I went through Ford’s 2022 service information to see what the factory documentation says about the rear smart-buckle system on four-seat versus factory-RSD cars.

I compared four configurations:

2022 Mach 1 four-seat
2022 Mach 1 factory RSD
2022 GT500 Recaro four-seat
2022 GT500 CFTP/RSD

The biggest finding was that Ford shows the same rear-buckle wiring architecture in all four cars. The four-seat Mach 1 and factory-RSD Mach 1 use the same RCM connections for the second-row buckle sensors, including C310B pins 58 and 57 for the left/right buckle signals and pin 53 for the shared return.

The exact same thing was true on the GT500 side. The regular GT500 and CFTP/RSD diagrams both show the same C3557/C3558 rear buckle connectors and the same RCM pin 58/57/53 arrangement.

So Ford’s service wiring diagrams do not show a different rear-buckle electrical architecture for the factory-RSD cars. That does not by itself prove the physical harness part number is identical, but electrically Ford documents them the same.

I also compared the RCM diagnostic information. The four-seat and factory-RSD cars use the same B140C/B140D DTC families, including Circuit Open and Incorrect Component Installed. More importantly, Ford’s Pinpoint Test AL defines B140C:4A and B140D:4A as setting when the RCM detects the rear buckle device but the RCM is not configured for that component.

That matches the hands-on result perfectly: when the car was given factory-RSD coding while the rear smart-buckle sensors were still connected, the RCM set B140C:4A and B140D:4A.

So tonight’s service-manual research strongly supports the idea that, under the factory-RSD configuration, the RCM is not supposed to see those rear smart-buckle devices connected.

The remaining test is simply factory-RSD coding with both rear buckle sensors physically unplugged.

I decided to look more into everything this morning, including pre smart belt era 2019 and 2020 cars as well.

In the 2019 Mustang service information, there is no B140C/B140D second-row seatbelt sensor DTC family at all. The 2019 Pinpoint Test AL is also a completely different procedure dealing with the passenger Belt Tension Sensor/OCSM, not the later generic β€œIncorrect Component Installed” logic. The 2019 Cell 046 wiring likewise shows no second-row buckle sensor circuits on RCM C310B pins 57/58; the relevant driver buckle wiring is still just the front buckle/track-position/return circuitry.

Then in 2020, Ford adds the full B140C/B140D DTC families to the Mustang RCM diagnostic chart, including :13 Circuit Open and :4A Incorrect Component Installed, with the :4A description stating that the RCM detects the device but is not configured for that component. But the 2020 GT500 wiring still does not show second-row buckle sensors or circuits on C310B pins 57/58. So the diagnostic support appears in the Mustang service information one model year before the actual rear smart-buckle hardware shows up in production.

Then in 2021, the actual hardware change appears. Ford Parts splits the rear buckle/receptacle into two different part numbers:

2018–2020: JR3Z-6360044-AA β€” Ford lists it specifically for 2018–2020 Mustang, and it is the earlier non-wired rear receptacle.

2021–2023: MR3Z-6360044-AA β€” Ford lists it specifically for 2021–2023 Mustang, and the Ford part image clearly shows the added electrical lead/connector.

What makes that even more interesting is that, from the Ford parts listings I checked, the front belts, front receptacles, and rear lap/shoulder belts all carry across 2018–2023. The rear buckle/receptacle is the belt-system hardware change that stands out at the 2021 model-year transition.

That lines up with the wiring too. The 2021+ diagrams add the actual second-row buckle sensor circuits on RCM C310B pin 58 for the left rear buckle and pin 57 for the right rear buckle, with C3557/C3558 as the rear buckle connectors. Those circuits simply are not shown in the 2019 or 2020 diagrams.

So the progression looks like this:

2019: no B140C/B140D, no rear smart-buckle wiring.
2020: B140C/B140D diagnostics added, but still no rear smart-buckle wiring.
2021+: wired rear buckle hardware appears, the second-row circuits appear on pins 57/58, and the As-Built configuration changes on four-seat cars.

My read is that Ford added the diagnostic/software support in 2020 in preparation for the 2021 hardware rollout, then actually enabled and used that rear smart-buckle system once the new receptacles were installed for 2021. That also explains why the 2020 DTC chart can contain B140C/B140D even though the 2020 Mustang wiring does not actually show those components installed.

SUCCESS! I did my FORScan changes,

FIRST:
IPC 720-02-02:
xxx4 xxxx -> xxx0 xxxx

SECOND:
RCM 737-02-01:
xxxx xxxx 7xxx -> xxxx xxxx 1xxx

Then showed the expected codes B140C/B140D for incorrect component installed on the second row seatbelt sensors.

I then powered down the car, unplugged both of the rear seatbelt sensors, powered back on the car, reset DTCs, read DTCs, and voila, NO DTCS WITH REAR BELTS UNPLUGGED ON A 2021+ MUSTANG!! NO MORE WORK AROUNDS!
