Hi everyone,

I have a completely stock 2017 Mustang GT and am planning on installing a roush axle-back exhaust (with stock resonator), however I have some worries on if it will be within the 90db noise limit, if I am forced to get it tested by the Epa. I do sometimes like to go into the high rpms, so I don't know if that will attract much attention from the police (I assume it will), but I am not really worried about that if they ask me to get it tested and it's within the noise limit under the testing conditions which I think is 500mm from exhaust tip to db reader at 3250rpm.
I am also based in Victoria.

Appreciate any advice and experience,
Muncho

Hi mate I have the Roush Axel back and later added a Roush H pipe combo. I can't really comment on decibels bit can definitely say you will love the sound of this Axel back, its beautiful. Nice tones and no droan. It is loud on cold start up, the beauty is it will sing when you put the boot in and can be very civilised if driving 'normally'. I loved it with the stock resonator but ultimately went for the H pipe combo later, which basically gives it more of everything 😀. Anyway go for it you will NOT regret it.

Hey Mate,

Thanks for the response.
The Roush does seem like it sounds really good based off the videos I've seen on youtube, and I'm really excited to install it myself. I probably won't go for a resonator delete like you, because apparently it's twice as loud than just the axleback and I don't want to risk the police attention, especially if I need to drive in Melbourne 😅. I have no idea how you're surviving with that combo lol.

You won't be disappointed, i researched lots of exhaust and i thought it sounds the best on video and was pleasantly suprised it rocked in real life. I put the axel back on May 2017 and H pipe May 2020. My car is a daily driver so I get to enjoy it lots 😁👍. With my combo cold start wakes.the.dead but other than that it's very flexible and not totally obnoxious when driving normally, so easy not to draw heaps of negative attention. It really come to the fore when giving the car some stick, so if ya strategic is fine. Anyway the only regret you will have is you took so long to put the Roush on 👍

When I was shopping for an exhaust back in 2017, I discovered all of the American aftermarket exhaust systems didn't meet Australian noise regulations. So in a technical sense, no they aren't "legal".

I had what was called the "EU-spec" Borla Touring Cat-back on my FM S550. The EU spec was supposed to be quieter due to the resonated H-pipe. However, even with the resonated H-pipe, it was considerably louder than stock and still not necessarily "legal". I can only image how much rowdier it would have been with a normal H or X pipe.

Having said that, in the 7 years I owned the car, not once did I get pulled over. There is a time and place for making noise, so in normal sedate driving, you will be fine. The Borla with the resonated H-pipe, you could potter around under 3,000 rpm with a lovely deep V8 burble with perfectly acceptable noise emissions. But when you cleared 3,000 rpm, all hell would break loose.

I actually considered the Roush as well as the Borla. While I loved the Borla, I sort of wish I went with the crisper rasp of the Roush.
