I am going to purchase either a 2015 or 2016 GT Premium. For those of you who have MFT, does it work as advertised, or is it as bad as Consumer Reports makes it out to be? If it's a pain, I'll wait and buy a 2016 (lightly used) and upgrade to Sync 3. Appreciate your thoughts. Thx.

I would get the 16 with Sync 3.. MFT is ok to me.. but Sync 3 is going to be moving further than MFT ever will.. Car Play will be coming.. Sync 3 is really nice.. I didn't like it at first but after having a lot of experience with it now and seeing some of whats to come.. I really think you would be doing yourself a disservice bye not getting a 16..

Now.. that being said.. unless you're saving an incredible amount of money then I would just get the 16.. if you arte saving a lot of money... we can get you a Sync 3 system for your Mustang .. so if you're saving 5k for the same car.. you would net bout 37-3500$ after paying to upgrade to sync 3..

So how much is it to upgrade to Sync 3? Ford is not going to do it, I asked Ford directly about this.

Yeah.. ford wont.. but I have been helping several do it.. some have upgraded from the base audio and others from MFT... Sync 3 starts 1200.. MFT to Sync 3 is just a plug in install.. with the exception of adding a GPS antenna...

If I buy a 2015, it will have MFT and NAV. Would I still need a GPS antenna? What about CarPlay? How much for the plug-in install?

Yes.. Because the sync 3 units require a different antenna.. Car play is a software and hardware (presumably a new USB hub) update that will be coming in the summer.. The situation would be the same even if you were to buy a 16.. 17 YM cars are the only ones out the wrapper with car play enabled..

If I have a base GT, how much (is it even possible) to upgrade to Sync 3?
Yes it is.. I have a complete plug and play setup available.. You can upgrade to MyFord touch or Sync 3.. I make a harness that makes it very easy to do.. You have several options .. You can do a sync 3 upgrade and use a bezel that a member named Zack makes for this purpose or you can go to a factory premium bezel.. If you go that way you gain auto climate controls.. If interested pm me and we can get some specifics

I would say sync 3 is probably the way to go. But I gotta tell you, I sure would miss having my own custom background - which you can do with MFT, but cannot with sync 3 (as I understand it)

You are saying ~$1500 all in to upgrade from MFT to sync 3? Do you have more details on the upgrade from MFT to sync 3? A website maybe?

The more I use it, the better it seems. Yes, not as quick or Apple-like as Sync3, but decent. I am a big Apple user. Latest iPhone, iMac 5k, Apple tv, iPad, apple watch, macbook air, so I may still upgrade after they release carplay. But Siri is beginning to work better with MFT for. I get in the car and it's connected through the speakers automatically. And the nav system is actually pretty decent once you get used to it. Sometimes I do an iPhone route via Siri, then just put my MFT map onscreen to go with it. Putting in the MFT route by voice is very slow. Still if you aren't buried in your screen while driving, not sure you will miss having Sync3 that much, if you have an iPhone anyway.

Like OEM said, consider what kind of a deal you can get on a new 2015, and let that guide your decision.

I do like the looks of MFT much more than what I have seen of Sync3. As much as I like my iPhone, I'm not thrilled about looking like I just taped it to my dash.

Oh yes...and remember, Sync3 is Blackberry, who were living on life support. Are they going to be around long??

Yes.. And less if you do not need navigation.. I do not have a site.. I only get enough units to supports a small amount of orders.. But I have sold several kits on his forum.. As well a couple on another forum.. But once you get the unit it's a matter of plugging the unit in and adding a GPS antenna..

Well.. QNX is a part of blackberry .. But they support almost every car manufacturer... Volvo.. Now ford.. And many others.. They will always be around.. They aren't technically intertwined with blackberry they were an acquisition.. And would be sold.. Like ford sold Aston Martin and jaguar and several others.. So they are going to be around .. Trust me ..

I currently have GPS, but when carplay is available, not sure I'd need the ford GPS anymore. What is the price without gps? I assume the antenna is what makes up part of the price difference and is not required if you use carplay - as gps data is coming from phone.

If I guy were to install this on a '15, how would one get the carplay update (or any updates for that matter) when available? As the myfordtouch website thinks I have MFT and will not give me sync3 updates - I presume.

When you say 'plug it in', is it literally just a plug? Or is the wiring a little more involved? Is the hardware the same unit you'd get in the '16s?

What is involved with the install of the gps antenna? Does need to be mounted on the outside of the vehicle?
