Its not about need, its about mileage and CAFE standards. The draconian federal standards coming due in 2020 for fleet mileage are forcing car companies to eek every last 10th of a MPG out of vehicles any way they can. The transmission and gearing can have a big impact - so they are going down the 10spd route. Of course they are also more expensive so the price of new cars is going nowhere but up.I do have to wonder just how many gears anyone needs! (cue the "I remember when we all had 4 speeds and if we were really lucky an overdrive option" - which in effect gave you six anyway!)
