Anybody widen stock wheels?

Not only is the result a really heavy wheel, but, if I recall, you need to purchase 4 extra wheels to use as donors.

I would just do the rears...so yeah, 2 more. Would end up with 2 full size spares and a staggered setup. Aren't wider wheels heavier than narrow ones anyway?

Correct the wider the wheel the heavier it is in this case.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't widening a wheel super sketchy? I've read the chance to damage the wheel is significantly increased due to the amount of stress put onto the weld. That being said, I love my wheels and would likely go this route if it WAS safe.

Honestly for the price you would pay to widen wheels, you're better off buying aftermarket wheels. Stock wheels are already heavy... widening them would just make them that much heavier.

what? you send them ONE set or pair of wheels, they provide the materials to widen them, are you saying they need the wheels you want widened and an extra set/pair to use an material?

and widened wheels are perfectly safe if done properly, if your brother-in-laws cousin Earl did them in his garage, yeah......sketchy! but Weld Craft is top notch. but, as said they are heavy! my stock 19x8.5 dark stainless with 255's weighed the same as my SVE GT350's that are 19x10 with a 285 :lol:cant imagine them widened, which I tossed over doing

I had my stock 19 x 9.5 PP wheels widened 1 inch, they cut the rim on a lathe then weld in a piece of aluminum strip. There is no structural down fall to worry about however making the rim 1 inch wider has caused the back spacing to change so the inner part of the tire will hit the shock mount on the rear. You could use a 25mm spacer to solve the problem and it makes the tire sit flush with the quarter panel but after doing so I chose just to buy new wheels as I didn't like the way the stock wheels stuck in on the front and I didn't want to run spacers.

Please stop with the rumor that you need to sacrifice a spare wheel to get one widened. It is not true. Weldcraft does an excellent job of widening wheels and or narrowing them. I've not heard of anyone with issues due to their work. As for the wheels being heavy, well if you start with a 32 lb wheel and add another pound or two it really doesn't matter. Widening is done to allow wider tires with keeping the stock look. If weight is an issue, buy new wheels.

In my case I run 25mm spacers on all four 18X8 wheels. If I get a new set widened 2in I would wind up with wheels that reach one inch further into the wheelwell than stock. I could then run 275/45R18s all around, I'm not a racer and don't worry about a couple extra pounds.

The wheels I'd love to widen are the 18" foundry. Those are such a nice design, but at 8", too narrow.
