Lug Nut Inserts on R Carbon Fiber Wheels

Here's a couple of pics of the lug nut inserts from the backside on the R Carbon Fiber wheels. They have a snap ring. First image is front (deep inset) and second is a rear.
BTW, I love the Steeda Jack Rails.

Nice, so it's basically a barrel with depressions on either side that's pushed in and snap rings applied to prevent it from going either direction. Seems a bit homebrew, but, sure, why not?

I like to disassemble things.
I just wanted say, I studied these wheels in detail when they were announced and searched everywhere for information that would help to sketch them in CAD.


I modeled the inserts by scaling photos and by looking through CR's various patent applications.


















Never once did I see a photo or hear mention of a snap ring being used to retain the insert. Thanks a lot for providing the close up shots of the area.

Out of curiosity, can you rotate the inserts by hand or are they a very tight fit?

Same here. I never seen or notice it on the other carbon fiber R wheels. Are the lug inserts aluminum or steel?

Sorry, I've been out in the garage and have remounted the wheels on the car before I saw these questions. I can't answer them.

Saw my first R at a dealer yesterday and checked out the CR wheels for the first time. I saw the fronts had some kind of white coating on the innerside of the barrel that had a rough, crystalline look. Since it was only on the portion of the rim under the rotor/caliper assembly, I assumed it was some kind of heat-shield material. In your research and examination of the CR patents, did they mention this coating material? I just wondered what it was.

Yep. It's ceramic coating to protect the carbon fiber from heat. All the R front wheels have that white coating.

I figured it might be ceramic. Looked like it would be a b!tch to clean after a day at the track!

I looked at the strut tops in the engine bay and they didn't seem to have any allowance for adjustment. I asked the salesman about stock alignment settings (specifically camber) and he drew a blank. He ran over to get a service guy and he confirmed there was no adjustment at the strut top, but "if you lower it, you'll get more negative camber." The car did seem to have quite a high ride height as it sat on the floor, but what do you need to do to get it setup well for the track? I see in youy sig file you mention camber plates, toe links, etc. So aftermarket parts are necessary to get the tires working well?

You can do a few things for camber adjustment on the front.
1) loosen the 2 strut to knuckle bolts and you will get a little bit of camber adjustment, but not much unless you oblong the strut holes (I myself wouldn't do this but others might).

2) replace the 2 strut to knuckle bolts with chicagoed bolts or (camber bolts).
I know for a fact by chicagoing the stock bolts will get you over -2.2 degrees camber without camber plates.

3) camber plates.

I run 2.0 degrees negative camber on the front of my car and run a square 305/30ZR19 pilot sport cup 2.

On the rear I have 1.7 degrees negative camber. The rear has stock adjustment. But I replaced all the rubber bushing for bearings. And also use BMR toe links to adjust camber.

I run toe at zero front and rear.
I have Forgeline GA1R open lugs wheels 11x19 and 305/30ZR19 pilot sport cup 2's front and rear. I also run GT350R front and rear springs, GT350R rear sway bar and BMR adjustable sway bar end links on all 4 corners.

The R you seen may sit higher because they have spacers in the springs during transport to slightly raise the car to help prevent scraping during loading and unloading.

I have a GT350R front splitter on my car, and the wheels / tires I run along with the R springs dropped my car 1 inch. The splitter is 3.5" from the ground on my level garage floor.

There's a very good chance that the car still had the shipping spacers installed giving it that high ride height.
