Paint front emblem without removing

Has anyone attempted to paint their pony emblem without removing it? I'd like to do a matte black rubber finish.

I have the active grill shutter and getting the emblem off looks like it would be a serious pain.

I'm thinking I can mask the grill with painters tape and then cut out the logo.

I matte blacked mine before finding a painted horse skeletonized pony. Just used blue painters tape to mask off the surrounding area and took my time, came out perfect.

I went this route, I painted my mirror covers but they were easy to remove, so this was the best way to get matt finish pony without painting on the grill.
