I've been doing research on this also as I'm getting ready to change out my fluids and came across the same thing.

The parts were already on the car. When I took the shock off, there was a bunch of dirt and debris in the upper part of the bearing next to the locking nuts - I think I saw others that came with a protective boot to keep dirt out of there - and I wonder if that has something to do with the failure.

Thank you, that is very helpful. It sounds like based on your experience and others who posted, it's not needed on drivers side unless I track the car and/or drive it hard, or so it would seem.
