Yeah, I've wondered that also. Good question and good for you for being paranoid. (Of course, the pedal itself could fail. Or a meteor could impact. But it's still a good question.)

It's highly dependant on your phone's hardware and software. Some auto connect quickly while others are slower. Still others connect quickly sometimes and slowly others. This is the case with mine.

By the way, it seems to work as long as you turn the radio off before you open the door to leave. It doesn't have to be strictly before you turn the engine off.

My friend at work has the same issue with his 2011 F150, so I wouldn't hold your breath for a fix. Bluetooth has been around for a long time, but few car manufacturers have put any significant effort into making their cars work with it seamlessly.

You'll still want winter tires. Breaking, an important safety feature, primarily depends on grip, which is the coefficient of friction. SUV technology does not improve the coefficient of friction; you will not break better in an SUV than in a Mustang.
