According to the regulatory filing, itās not a new option package. Rather, itās a different powertrain option.
In my view, it doesnāt make any business sense to offer a second 2.3T thatās just a relatively small bump in horsepower/torque from the existing 2.3T. You could get there with a tune...
Also consider holding out for a 2020. Looks like there will be another 2.3T-based powertrain option.
My money is on it being a mild hybrid version - a meaningful upgrade from the plain EcoBoost, particularly with more low-end torque, but not as fast as the V8.
Found a little nugget in this article:
āOn a related note, the Mustang Hybrid is also due in 2020 with an EcoBoost-type engine according to Raj Nair, former president of Ford in North America. Look forward to āV8 power and even more low-end torque.āā...
I totally misread this. Thought I saw āupgraded to 380 hpā.
Hereās what happened when I googled ā2020 Focus RSā:
https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2020-ford-focus-rs-have-400bhp-425lb-ft-mild-hybrid-powertrain
Just to spend another moment on the main point of the OP, hereās a thought experiment:
It seems like the two most likely ways Ford may be approaching the second 2.3T are (1) an āSVTā version with the Focus RS engine, or (2) a hybrid version (the easiest of which to implement would be a mild...
Here are a couple of links showing Fordās 48v mild hybrid system (currently in the Transit, slated for the Focus in Europe for 2020).

The more I think about it, the more I think youāre probably right. To revert to the Gen2 Coyote and to drop or reconfigure the Bullitt engine would be a massive and very public admission of reliability and/or manufacturing issues.
Thereās still something deeply unsatisfying about what weāre...
Great point. Would be interesting to see how a mild hybrid V8 fits into the lineup (above the V8 and below the GT350) from a price and performance perspective.
I know Ford already has a 48v mild hybrid system that itās starting to use in some models. Not sure if anyone knows its weight/power...
Seems unlikely to me that specs for RHD Mustang would be in a US regulatory filing. (Also, I thought the UK Mustang was specāed at 444 HP - not 435 like the Gen2 Coyote.)
As for why they could bring back the old engine, I might refer you to the wave of threads discussing the tick (whether the...
Doesnāt make sense to me to offer a second 2.3T with a small uptick in horsepower.
It would make much better sense to me if they would offer a āmild hybridā version of the 2.3T.
Regarding the 435HP for the 5.0, I wonder if this signals a return to the Gen2 (ā15-ā17) Coyote (not to derail the...
This is pure speculation, but BWI could be transitioning to its next-gen magneride platform. I saw that the GT500 will have some sort of next-gen magneride. Is it too much to hope that it will come to the GT for the 2020 model year as well?
Beautiful! More pics please!
I thought I was the only one crazy enough to want the Showstopper Red interior with the Velocity Blue exterior. How does the aesthetic work in-person? Is it too āSupermanā? Looks amazing to me.
That's exactly right. I count myself among the group of potential Mustang buyers who are freaked out by this announcement. I've been bitten by the Mustang bug and was planning to buy a 2019 GT PP1 this summer. Since the announcement, I'm questioning Ford's commitment to invest in the Mustang...
Thereās also an opportunity cost in pulling the trigger now. You have to assume there wonāt be better choices available for you and your wife in the next year or two.
How often do you need to use the wifeās jeep? Can you rent a car for her (or have her use an Uber) for those days? A lot...
Really enjoying this thread! Looking forward to ordering my PP2 Mustang this summer. Does anyone happen to know if the PP2 wheels clear the Ford Performance GT350R brake upgrade kit (Part# M-2300-AA)?
