Without the battery cover, the battery can get very hot ... I've seen it happen when I ran without it one day in the summer. It got so hot, the battery puked a little acid out the vents - not good. With the cover over the battery it stays much cooler.
What was the dealer's diagnosis? What did the other head look like? The arrows are pointing to an area on the camshafts that are not bearing surfaces, or anything on the cams that do anything. Must have been other things going on if they're replacing the long block.

Must be some super small stuff, since the screen used on the battery cover is pretty fine. The screen is only 3/64" (0.050") mesh. Anything small enough to get through should be able to drain out that giant drain hole I circled in red above. Maybe a mouse was living in there too, lol.
Did your battery compartment have the drain setup shown in the red circle? The missing round patch isn't covering any kind of drain hole - the drain hole is in the red circle in the photo below. The cowl over the whole battery box has a screen over it and should keep large debris like leaves...
