I would not unplug the connector and drive the car on the streets, you are asking for trouble if you do that! At the track or on a dyno it is a different story, but on the streets you are risking loosing control.

Just an idea... I wonder if this could be a low rpm high load detonation issue? If it is you should be able to repeat it in 5th gear at very low rpm. If the same phenomenon accures, at least you know it's detonation. Did the previous owner have a tune on the car maybe, and the car is running...

I am no expert here, but I would bet no way you "smoked" the clutch. These clutches are designed to take a lot of "abuse" on a track. You may have roughed the surface a little, so read about how to clean that surface with driving technics.
