Has to be urban legend. The P-51 "Mustang was introduced in 1942 for WWII, and was probably, in some part, responsible for the Ford Mustang name some 22.5 years later.
Agreed. The P-51 Mustang and the 1964.5 Ford Mustang had close ties with the Ford designers. In that the U.S. Airforce has yet to resurrect the Mustang moniker, Ford chose the Lightning II.
