I hit the one on my 16 with a DA and a polish to get the swirls out that developed over time, and that worked fine. The panel on my 18 is still good, but I'm really careful to wash it gently and keep it waxed. So far, so good. If it ever gets bad, I'll just do like someone else here already...

It shouldn't be. Worst case scenario and you just tap in (or replace) the wires right at the PCM. I'd like a cleaner install though, so that's why I'm hunting for where they terminate.

Yeah, although I'm working on the work around for that. Mine is one of the "don't haves" even though it's a premium 401a car. Not sure what dictates if you get the pre-wired harness or not, but it's obviously some option set. Maybe the premium stereo, or magride, or a vert...who knows...
