IMHO that would be the ethical and honest thing to do if you're not willing to just walk away from the deal. (There's a reason some smart salesperson came up with the line, "Buyers are liars.")
I really don't think trying to find an alternate buyer as being any less ethical or honest. Dealer still gets the sale, doesnt have to do any extra legwork, just has to switch the order which will take them all of 15-30 minutes max

Exactly right, and the dealer might appreciate the lead. But I'd bet he already has a line of buyers waiting that he'd rather do business with, especially because he's not going to be too happy with the guy backing out of the deal and won't want to do him any "favors."

No doubt - the OP actually may be doing the dealer a favor by backing out, so he can make more money on the next guy.

All the stories I read like this have that same out come. Heck I kind of expect my dealer to question why to sell mine to me for 4K adm when everyone is paying 10k. It's not over until it's over. The game that is.

Just a question. I live in a non-sales tax state. If you buy the car and pay a sales tax then turn around and sell it, even if you are not a dealer does the second buyer have to pay a sales tax again on that second sale to title and license the car? If so, and you want the base cost plus your sales tax payment and also want your $1K deposit back as well, you're talking a pretty hefty added price tag for that second buyer. So buying it to re-sell it may be a bit of a gamble to find a buyer willing to spend that much.

Sales tax is obviously going to vary by locality. Most of the time, you pay tax where the you, the buyer, reside in regardless of where the car is coming from. Depending on where you're buying out-of-state, you may have to pay a tax there too. Sometimes you have to pay to make up the difference between the two tax rates. Sometimes the state gets doubled paid on tax, sometimes not.

In Arizona for example, there's a regular sales tax on new vehicles purchased at dealers, but there's no sales tax on private sales. So if you were to do both transactions here, then the state only gets its tax once.

California on the other hand, oh look out. Every time the title changes hands, the state collects tax on the transaction price. You can say "gift" on the title, but I'd be very wary about trying to pull that one on a $60k car. They're also one of those states that wants the difference in tax for out-of-state transactions.

This all also assumes you pay $60k cash for the car and don't have to fuss about with titles from the lender, which they probably won't even immediately have settled in the first month or two after your initial purchase.

Buying cars out of state can be complicated.
