As to the title, anyone thinking of running a square style number plate on there mustang?

I think they would look okay on the back (not to dissimilar to our US friends), but not sure on the front.

Thoughts?

I've wondered about how you guys do license plates--just from watching tv I've seen square, rectangle and even some that look like stickers. Are the plates premade there or are they made up when you buy them?

DVLA are pretty tight on dimensions and spacing etc. All characters got to appear in a single line, so unless you've got a personalised plate with fewer characters, you're gonna have to go conventional I'm afraid. (if you want to stay legal that is).

Pressed metal might look pretty cool though.

There are a set of regulations regarding things like font size, plate size, border size (distance between lettering and edge of plate) etc etc and they're actually incredibly strict.

You can have them made at an approved supplier & they aren't allowed to deviate from those rules. Alternatively you can order your plates off the net & they don't have to follow the same rules as they're "for show purposes only". ;)

You're also legally allowed to display stick-on plates, IIRC, if there is no obvious place or way to fix proper plates to your car i.e. some Ferraris and suchlike.

I keep thinking about square plates - I have a 6 digit private plate so might look quite cool. Only problem is how to fit it...also my dealer said you can't mix and match the sizes - it's square at the front & back or rectangle at the front & back.

We can't, I assume. From an email to my dealer re plates;

"We only fit the number plate, the bracket/surround are already supplied fitted by Ford.

I have been told by my management it is not legal to have a mixture of square and long plate.

As we are a Ford Store we can’t fit anything that is NOT approved by Ford. However you are welcome to fit this yourself.

From the brochure it seems that the Mustang number plate set up is similar to that of the front number of the new Mondeo, the Mondeo comes with the bracket already fitted and it has little dimples to guide where the holes should be drilled.

Until the Mustang is here and I can have a close look at it I can’t be 100% sure it is the same setup as the Mondeo, once a Mustang is here I will let you know."

On another note, I have sent my dealer 39 email lol, anyone beat that?!

In NL and BE, you can have motorcycle sized number plates. I saw a grey import ROUSH s550 at an event here that that them (see image).

Here's the holder I had my dealer installing today....

Again, same holder as the back.

It's basically two brackets (sort of "U" shaped) that can either be screwed on to the bumper, or attached using very strong double sided tape. The plate in then held in by the "U". Hope that explanation can be understood...hehe.

Not strictly true. You can have plates that follow these formats

So square can be used using 2 lines for characters.
