My car came with this rear end... 3.55, what does this mean over the 3.73 or othes offered?

Hello fellow 3.55 dude, it means the middle road of gearing options and good times ahead .

what does it mean "over" the other ratios?

Not a damn thing... it's merely a unit of measure/specification. all three mustang ratios have characteristics that are either slightly positive or slightly negative... in other words, they are just different.

what the 3.73 can do better than the 3.53 is put less stress of the drive train in terms of torque needed to create drive... that means it can turn the rear wheel easier, which normally translates into better acceleration.

HOWEVER, what happens to the 3.73 that does not happen to the 3.53 is that it runs out of usable RPM's quicker because the motor is spinning faster (at a given land speed) therefore cars with 3.73 can not achieve a top speed number that a 3.53 car can.

those are the two main trade offs of taller gearing... like I said, it's customization and neither is "better" than the other... just different.

one easy way to look at it is, think of the final drive like the front chain rings on a bicycle... most modern bicycles have TWO main chain rings in the front, the larger chain ring would be akin to the 3.53 and is harder to pedal... the smaller chain ring is akin to the 3.73 final drive and is much easier to pedal (the rear gears on a bicycle are akin to the transmission gears 1-6).

In fifth gear, the 3.73:1 geared car will spin its engine 3.73 times per one revolution of the wheels. The 3.55:1 geared car only spins its engine 3.55 times per one revolution of the wheels. This means that you'll be quicker with the 3.73:1 gears, you'll use more gas, and you'll reach a lower top speed. I got the standard gears because the Coyote V-8 is a torquey mutha and doesn't need the optional gears for the kind of driving I'll be doing. I drove a V6 with the 3.55's and a stick and it was a lot of fun.
