Changed the rear end fluid

Everyone has discussed the changing of the engine oil, while I agree it is important the rear diff fluid is just as important IMO. Very easy to do since the drain/fill plug is on the rear of the diff cover, pulled the plugs and the fluid that came out was not clear/looked like it should with the break in time on the parts back there.

Took 2 1/2 qts of Amsoil 75w-90 and a little time but glad I did it.

Hate the smell of diff fluid though, that takes a while to wear off

Yea, burned up LSD clutch smell in the diff fluid is possibly the worst. While on the subject, did your front half of the diff case rust like crazy? I may drop mine just to paint it.

No, not yet...not sure what special socket that it but wow, those are weird bolt heads holding the diff cover on!

Just glad that Ford finally went away from the fill hole in the back of the diff next to the d/s, that was a PITA to do!

Curious, what kinda bolts you referring to?

Are you talking about the reverse torx head bolts? or are they spline? I don't remember from last time I looked.

Reverse torx is an excellent description, wasn't sure what to call them!

Common on most IRS's from around the globe. I've probably got 3 or 4 cheap sets in my toolbox or scattered around the garage cause I always seem to lose them.

Any reason you changed it, or just to get the Ford stuff out?

No reason other to get the "break in" stuff out of there.

It is syn according to the sticker on the diff.

Did you add 4 oz of friction modifier when changing the diff oil?

Ford LSD's require this. I've used the Motorcraft version in the past.

I did not; for the EBM it is not listed as a must have and in discussions with Anthony, another Amsoil dealer we both agreed that the GT has the LSD and not the EBM.

Actually, it is listed in the manual for the EB ( page 271 ). According to everything I've read, and from what it says on my window sticker, the EB does have an LSD.

Trust me, I know which is why I asked another Amsoil guy to make sure I wasn't crazy...

Here is what he said in our discussion:
From my understanding traction lok is torsen. So you only need the modifier for the GT PP.

All you need is to put the severe gear in it.

I will be after my next trackday.


Well from what I can see the 2014 GTs and older had torsen lsd, so you were right to add it. Since the EB PP and base GTs have a standard LSD you don't need it.

I will not be running it in my car unless I put in a torsen lsd down the line.

I hope they back up what they say by not adding the 4 oz friction oil. Best wishes with that choice.

FYI my 11 and 03 Gt's had regular LSD, only my 15 GT PP has the torsen like other track models
