What Octane Gas Are You Using?

Hi Everyone,

I recently took my car in to the dealer because of a check engine light. They diagnosed the car and the trouble code reads back a misfire. They haven't been able to find the root cause of the problem. Today, I was told that the misfire could be caused because I'm using 91 Octane in my Ecoboost PP.

It got me wondering what octane is everyone else using. The manual does says we should use 87 Octane. Could the tech be right? Could 91 Octane cause a misfire?:shrug:

Bad gas, timing off, ignition or fuel supply delivery such as injector, bad flash or ecu, list goes on and on for a misfire. Newer techs mainly relie on computer diagnosis rather then start pulling parts and looking. 91 octane should not be misfiring on your car.

I use 93 and 91, everything is fine but only had the car for a month which is 900 miles

I use 93 at all times. No issues. I've heard different people say that the plug gap on the stock plugs vary pretty wildly sometimes, so pull those and gap them all to 0.030. It's relatively easy to do and might save a trip back to the dealership. Also, try different fuel from another station.

Your fuel should be fine ,the car will adjust for the lower octane.Check your plugs if it happens again.

Have been using Shell V-power 91 ever since filling up for the first time. (Dealer originally filled with 87). shell V-power is ethanol free, which is healther and cleaner for your engine. You should try using ethanol free gas in your car it might clear some of those misfiring issues.

It was my understanding that all manufacturers use ethanol in their gas. It just varies how much they use. That's what I had heard. Is that not true. Here in California most of the gas comes from two local refineries. 91 Octane should be the same across the board right, except for some additives.

Maybe so but it's different here in Canada.
